Re: Captured Soviet banners

Hello utc,

Welcome to the forum, glad you enjoyed this thread. Are you looking for photos of imperial Russian unit flags that have been captured?

Re: Captured Soviet banners

I haven't posted images from my collection in a while, so I thought I might share this one. I recently acquired it on EBay Germany. I can't quite make sense of the inscription, but, from all appearances, it's a "political" one. No inscription on the back other than some mysterious numbers. However, the obvious guess is that this banner was captured, like so many others, during "Barbarossa".

If anybody can provide a translation for the inscription (aside from the usual "Proletarians of the World Unite!"), I'd be very grateful.

Regards,

Mark Jaeger

Mark,

As best I can make it out, I read the Russian as:

"Merekhodashoye Banner Division"

"For first place in combat and political training"

Close, but the first word is actually "Perekhodyashee", better translating as "Division Challenge Banner." Thus, the banner was not permanently awarded, but could rotate among the division's subordinate units according to whichever organization won in periodic contests and stayed there until unseated by another sister unit.

desantnik,

Thank you for the clarification. A nice/unusual military banner.

Mark,

Given desantnik's clarification, "Rotating Division Banner" would be a good layman's way of describing it.

Here is a picture from the front page of the 19th November 1943 Guernsey Evening Press. One of very few English language publications relaying German propaganda.
