Zhukov Railway Troops Tunic
Presumably the owner at some point (I would suppose it was after the Zhukov uniform was replaced by new dress uniforms) removed the wreathed star on the lapel and substituted the emblem of the Soviet Army Railway Troops.
The collar and cuffs are piped in blue, the shoulder boards are gold with black piping and stripes. In the photographs the boards may appear silver, since they seem to have "toned" with age, and that has had the effect of "muting" the gld color. When the collar is lifted, the portion of the shoulder boards that were covered by the collar are a brighter gold. I have always liked the Soviet railway stuff ! |

Re: Zhukov Railway Troops Tunic
If the lace on the shoulderboards is indeed gold, then I believe that the stars should be silvered...

Re: Zhukov Railway Troops Tunic
They look silver to me also, but Will states they are gold - hence my input.

BTW -Following proper forum etiquette - of course: IMO: The MTC cipher on the collar lapel is perfectly acceptable for your jacket with it's blue piping that was in order during that period for MTC. Also, IMO: The wreathed star denoted Infantry as of 1955...

Re: Zhukov Railway Troops Tunic
Ah, well, thanks then, Richie.
The toning of the boards does make it a bit confusing. I had a recollection of Railway boards of the period being gold with black pipng and stripes, thus my belief that the gold had toned over the years, particularly because under the collar it does seem to have a more golden hue. My recollection is that the chart on piping and board colors in Streather's book ("Soviet General & Field Rank Officer Uniforms" which, I know, has some issues) designated Railway troops as wearing gold boards. Am I recalling that incorrectly? Last edited by Will; 11-22-2011 at 08:35 AM. |
