His Red Star citation. A translator of intelligence for the Staff of the 9th Guards Army. According to the new look and updated podvignaroda he became a Junior Lieutenant according to his record card.

Thanks for those documents CtanhR. I missed this when you posted it. But by coincidence I was writing something about Golant on my blog and searched for this thread. It's been some time since Tal started this thread.

As a side note I can add a bit more to the interesting history of Veniamin Golant. When he presented his paper at university, for his doctors title, it was first approved but then rejected. Apparently some higher up wanted a more anti-american approach. The paper didn't show enough of what they called the "American imperialistic predator face". Given the subject, Revolt in the German colonies in East Africa 1904-08, perhaps that wasn't too surprising. Anyway Golant must have succeeding in finding a way to better his ideologic angle and got his title in 1952, as seen in the thread.
