Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set

Thanks again guys. Eric, will do--especially once the research arrives here. I love seeing the docs myself. This gent was a Communist Party member for 45+ years. His CPSU ID shows that he paid his party dues dutifully until April of 1990. I wonder what happened then--did his faith in the party (which was outlawed in his native Moldova a year later) finally wane? Or did he pass away (at a somewhat early, but not unusual for USSR) age of 66?

Re: Bulgaria, yeah the delay is almost certainly here in US Customs. I imagine there's a list of countries for which all packages get x-rayed / scrutinized here, and Bulgaria is on that list. Esteban, I do think the restrictions you describe have since been lifted though. (according to the research I had done while waiting) Regardless, there's definitely a strong delay there and USPS doesn't have much info when it does occur.

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set

Interestingly items from Bulgaria get to me in Australia quicker than many other countries including the US. It does suggest that the delay may be at the US end.

However, every package I get from the Ukraine or Georgia is opened and examined by Customs, then resealed and passed on - different national concerns I guess?

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set

Outstanding set! I'd be dancing on the ceiling if something like that fell into my hands. I think that it is criminal when a set is split - I can't make any statement about selling off family items as I never sell anything. I recently acquired from random sources a split Bulgarian GPW participant colonel's complete set, complete less 1 document a very common, insignificant (to anyone who doesn't have the other 21 awards) document. I tracked down the person with the item in Germany who had paid under $10 for it and offered him anything for it, name his price, replacement, etc.. But I got an outright "NO, thanks" and then after explaining how it was the missing piece in my set I got an additional 4 words in reply "I want it, Sorry". The person with it went by the name of Kock so Kock by name... fill in the blank.... At least I have found a scan of the document so that can go with all the originals so at least the set isn't that incomplete. On the topic of the Bulgarian postal system I have had a vast experience with it believe it or not. I have had packages arrive in England from various locations in Bulgaria in 2 and 3 working days but I have also sometimes had to wait weeks for packages sent from the same sellers via the same method. I find it very strange that Bulgarians are still forced to put customs declarations on their packages which are sent within the free trade zone of the European Union.

Enjoy your complete set and trust in the Bulgarian post they've never damaged a single item of mine. I really can not wait to see this set in a luxurious display. Oh the glory of it all!

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set

Sure, Alexei--a couple more photos.. The set is in my hands now. I need to take more pics of the docs as well. It's a bit curious that the Nevsky and Gvardia badge are in almost impeccable shape while the medal ribbons are so dirty and tattered. The CSM is unnumbered. Well, research will help clear up any doubts.

There is one screwback missing btw--a GPW-2 # 392,194. I suspect the GPW-2 may have gone missing in the veteran's lifetime--his 1985 jubilee GPW-1 has almost no gold plating left, as if someone intentionally made it look like a GPW-2. Who knows..

Thanks for the kind words and comments guys. :thumbsup

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set

Congrats on the set! These days it seems almost impossible to find complete award groupings.

You can find anything you want if you are willing to throw enough $$$ at the problem. Unfortunately our budgets are only finite.

So true. We could all find some dreamy items in the NY Sale for example, if money were no object.. This aviator set was pretty much at the top of my budget...for now anyway. Sometimes I think if I weren't married I would go crazy and buy all these extravagant pieces..

Update: according to research this hero was actually commander of a Mounted Machine Gun Platoon (станковые пулеметы), 44 Guards Rifle Regiment, 15 Guards Rifle Division.
After the war he served in the anti-aircraft defenses, therefore the aviation captain's uniform. I will post a citation for his Red Banner today, a downgrade from HSU! Truly awe-inspiring.
