Re: Color photos of Russia circa 1910

The rest of his photos are floating around on one or more of the Russian chat and photo forums. They can usually be found where the photoshoped combinations of early Soviet Russia are overlaid onto newer photos.

What is really amazing is how these photographs were done (with the B&W and then the three color filters) which is in the article just above the photos. You can see the use of the filters in shots that include bodies of water - very impressive, especially for the time.

I love the clarity and depth of color of pictures of people in native costume in the southern regions like Kazakhstan and what is now Uzbekistan - vivid hues of blues, reds and greens.:thumbsup

I've never seen anything like that. The colors were beautiful. Reminds me of the old lithographs that still maintain their brilliant color except these are much better because they are photos. Thanks Eric!

I may have read the article incorrectly that is at the top of the link, but the US purchased the "glass negatives" from (somebody?). I don't know squat about film developing, but I believe with original plates/slides, you can reproduce the images indefinitely (I know it is vaguely related to the large glass slides used by cartoonists when making vivid images). I had to read about what a "lithograph" is and how they make them and from what I am guessing it is similar on in the reproduction capacity and with glass. How? I dunno. All I know is that I've seen large glass negatives in the Smithsonian Natural History building (Ansel Adams' photos, I think) but they were in black and white - nothing on this level.

I short, it is a lost art to be sure and it took someone with a high degree of creative genius to pull this off.:thumbsup I'll try to dig up the others.

OK - I answered my own questions here: The Empire That Was Russia: The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated (A Library of Congress Exhibition)

The US Library of Congress has the negatives. The link shows you how they make photos from the negatives and the whole series of pictures from the "Photographer to the Tsar.";) There are 2606 images in all - so pace yourselves.
