Description:

"This is the official medal given to all athletes and officials from the RUSSIAN FEDERATION to commemorate their participation in the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Bright bronze in original velveteen presentation box. Mint condition.

Each athlete was only given one of these and they were difficult for collectors to find in Salt Lake."

I doubt these were that unique as seller describes, because I've seen bunch of them for sale. But this nice set, however.

HuliganRS,

The medal you show is not widely available. Members of the delegation to the OG (that is, all the athletes, plus all the other people in the delegation) got it, in addition to the people who worked at the Russian National Olympic Committee. So, if you make the count, that should be quite a few hundreds.

Additionally, most members of the Russian (Soviet some years ago) delegation usually sell theirs before leaving the OG, as they know that there are collectors which are looking for these, and are ready to part with $$$. So, better bring back $20~30 home than one no so scarce medal.

New World,

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it yours? If so, is it available, somehow?

I was recently in conversation with one dealer, who said that he is a middle man for a person who wishes to sell a complete set of BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD Olympic Medals... The ones actually awarded to a Soviet/Russian athlethe(s)!!! A bit vague, I know, but the product is pretty cool nonetheless...

Price tag: $20,000 - $25,000 US

ouch!!!

Eric

What mint?

What mint was in charge here? MMD or LMD?
Is there a mint mark?

Bronze-Winner's medal in Helsinki Olympics 1952 with diploma and in case of issue was sold in Finland November 2002.

In the same lot there were also diplomas fron shooting world
championships games in Caracas 1954 and some others.

In auction starting price was 3700 euros, sold 5600 euros (+12.2 % buyer's charge).

I don't mean this as a joke...

I too was struck by what seems to me to be a reverse design of two terribly emaciated human beings on the backs of the medals. Then it occurred to me that these looked like the images of men and women in photographs of concentration camp prisoners after liberation. The medals are for the 1972 Munich games, and of course Dachau is just outside of Munich.

A little creepy.
