Medal Of Nahimov.
This is an interesting one!
I bought it from Alexei who sent it to Paul McDaniel and was told that other than the hoop the medal is original but he could not do an authenticaion on this medal, because it's either a 1985 or post-Soviet issue. I asked Igor Pak who is the owner of the MonDvor site what his oppinion was on this medal and he told me that he has an example just like it. It was minted between 1992 & 1994 in anticipation of Russian Federation approving this medal along with medal of Ushakov and several others in 1994. On March 2, 1994 new medal regulations were instituted by President of Russian Federation but this medal did not make the list so the whole batch of minted Nakhimov medals were to be destroyed. Just like everything else in Russia, a small number were not destroyed and were leaked into the marketplace. No one knows how many were not destroyed but the experts believe that only a handfull survive. Rusty.

Rusty,
Well, there is a theory that they started making this variation in 1985, and that it was serial numbered with very high numbers in the 14XXX range. Apparently unnumbered specimens also existed (unissued or unfinished?). I don't know for sure one way or the other, and Paul seems to agree with me. Here are his words exactly.
