The medal was instituted on February 15, 2001. The six-line inscription on the reverse says: <THE EARTH'S FIRST COSMONAUT YURI ALEXEYEVICH GAGARIN> is in the center with a five-pointed star above it. The inscription: <COSMONAUTICS FEDERATION OF RUSSIA> runs along the upper periphery. The dates <1934-1968> are inscribed along the lower periphery. The ribbon plate has a two-line inscription: <40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FLIGHT>. Minted at the Moscow Mint. Quantity: 1,000 medals. This medal is in SPACE EXPLORATION AWARDS, Volume I. Sold for $33.96 + S/H. A great addition to my collection!

There are a number of listings of Space Medals from the estate of the former Vice Chairman of the Federation of Cosmonautics of Russia Comrade Savinsky. He was also Head of the Society of Veterans of Baikonur. This is the Federation of Cosmonautics of the USSR's Academician V.P. Glushko Medal (First issue) with document. The medal was instituted on May 25, 1990. The reverse shows the Energia-Buran reusable space transportation system in the center with the dates <1908> and <1988> on its right and left sides. Two inscriptions are along the medal's periphery: <ACADEMICIAN V.P. GLUSHKO> above and <COSMONAUTICS FEDERATION OF THE USSR> below. Manufacturer: Moscow Mint. Number of Recipients: over 3,000.

Another award from the estate of Comrade Savinsky is this Federation of Cosmonautics of Russia Academician V.I. Kuznetsov Medal with document. The medal was instituted on December 19, 1992, in commemoration of Victor Ivanovich Kuznetsov (1913-1991), Chief Designer of command (gyroscopic) instruments for intercontinental ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles. Kuznetsov was Twice Hero of Socialist Labor and a Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Manufacturer: Moscow Mint. Quantity: 1,000. A rare piece!

Another award from the Comrade Savinsky estate: Federation of Cosmonautics of Russia's Yu. V. Kondratyuk Medal (First issue) with document. The medal was instituted in 1992 in commemoration of Yuri Vassilyevich Kondratyuk (1897-1942), a pioneer of space science and technology. Reverse shows the three-line raised inscription: <Yu. V. KONDRATYUK 1897-1942> in the center. Two inscriptions along the periphery: <COSMONAUTICS FEDERATION> above and <OF RUSSIA> below. Manufacturer: Moscow Mint. Quantity: 150.

Another award from the estate of Comrade Savinsky: the Academician A.D. Nadiradze Medal instituted jointly by the Moscow Heat Technology Institute and the Cosmonautics Federation of Russia on March 12, 1993. The medal commemorates the outstanding designer of rocket and space systems, Director and Chief Designer (1961-1987) of the Moscow Heat Technology Institute, Twice Hero of Socialist Labor, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Alexander Davidovich Nadiradze (1914-1987). Reverse has the four-line inscription: <COSMONAUTICS FEDERATION OF RUSSIA - MOSCOW HEAT TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE> in the center. The Pioneer ICBM is reproduced along the bottom. The inscription: <ACADEMICIAN A.D. NADIRADZE> runs along the upper periphery. Manufacturer: Moscow Mint. Quantity: 1,000.

Russian Medal ROSCOSMOS Space Federation USSR Chelomei
Vladimir Nikolayevich Chelomei (1914-1984), Soviet rocker designer and Chief Designer of OKB-52 (later TsKBM, NPO Mashinostroenia). He led the development of several generations of Soviet cruise missiles and ICBMs. Some of his most important contributions were in the area of spacecraft and rocket design. He developed the UR-500 (Proton) rocket, variations of which launched the Salyut, Mir, and ISS and are still in use today, the Almaz military space station, which became Salyut 2,3, & 5, and the TKS manned ferry vehicle, variations of which flew as add-on modules on Salyut 7, Mir, and the ISS. His awards include: Hero of Socialist Labor (1959, 1963), USSR State Prize (1967, 1974, 1982), Lenin Prize (1959), 4 Orders of Lenin, and the Order of the October Revolution. The Russian Federal Aerspace Agency (ROSAVIACOSMOS) was established according to Russian Federation President’s Decree #651 on May 25, 1999, through transformation of the Russian Space Agency (RSA). To provide incentives for the Federal Space Agency’s central staff employees, employees of space related organizations reporting to ROSCOSMOS the Agency has instituted number of awards of ROSCOSMOS. The commemorative medals (24 issues 1992-2007) are generally presented with no award documents to employees of Russian and foreign organizations for their active participation in the implementation of space programs and projects. |

Kovtunenko, Vyacheslav Mikhailovich. 1921-1995. Designer of space technology. Kovtunenko led the KB-3 design bureau, responsible for the development of space technology at the KB Yuzhnoe development center in Dnepropetrovsk. He later led spacecraft development at NPO Lavochkin in Moscow.
