Alexei,
I think until proved otherwise those two theories can right to live. We just can analize fact and lean to one site or another.
But doesn't it look strange there in no facts at all regarding producing steel H&S? Neither at the mint nor at award department of Defence Ministry?
I mentioned only Durov's name but there are many other researches who has the same opinion including Muzalevsky, Volodin, Merlay, and Varlamov who are part of magazine "Kavaler" team.
Even during the war the technology of manufacturing Soviet awards was followed without any exceptions. They didn't try to save on 25 gram of silver but tried on 0.3 gram of gold? Why didn't they save on 8 gram of gold for OPW 1? But there OPW 1 with replaced H&S as well. Doesn't make sense to save on 0.3 gram but waste over 8 grams.
It's known fact when Stalin was presented some patterns of awards made from brass he demanded to make them in gold. It happened during most difficult time.
You right that wires of H&S don't feet. I saw quite a few of them and on most of them I saw small damage on enamel where H&S were attached. The job is widely varies in quality which is impossible if it was done on the mint. Off cause, the soldier didn't replace them sitting in the trench. You would be suppressed what some soldiers hands could do in mechanic and repair shops on battalion level not talking about regiment level and higher.
Regards
Eugene

I forgot to add that all this alterations were made mostly during the war and not by jewellers after. That’s why they were not made from scratch. Especially if there is easy way just to take H&S from uniform star.

A little off topic - remember that Michail Kakashnikov built a prototype SMG at a workshop for tank maintanance.

BTW, Eugene is correct regarding the saving of gold - it does not make sense that anyone was trying to save gold during the war: What about Lenins, Ushakovs, Suvorovs etc. And of course - Platinum is more expensive...

Alexei, I think that you are "too honest dealer"

Mark, Tal,

I never go by the "caveat emptor" rule. If I sell something I am responsible for it, so I felt it was the right thing to do.

Eugene,

I totaly agree, untill we have some facts both theories have the right to exist.

I always thought these were presented in the simple white cardboard boxes with the serial number and award name stamped on the box? Looks like a fantasy box to me.

I've got to go with Art on this one. I've only seen them in the white cardboard boxes with the serial number on them.

Sovvisor,

I have tried to magnify the box and especially the H&S, and I don't think they are Soviet production.

Everyone,

does this belong in the Jokes section or in the SUPER RARE variation of the Monetny Dvor classified as "Uncle Vanya was drunk when he made this order"

BTW it is up on eBay right now.
When asked the seller for detailed scans, his reply was:
Quote:
Dear sir-Unfortunately I don't have more scans of the award-I do everything digitally and I'd like to email you some more images but I have to confess I don't know exactly how to send email images. I would have tried to shoot better images but once a bid is placed I can't revise the photos. If you have specific concerns that I can answer I'll be glad to do that-I do guarantee my stuff but of course I would rather resolve andy questions before sending something as it is a hassle for everyone to return something. Thanks-Jemison
Thanks,

Eric
