I would like to start this tread with the hope to get updates on the Mongolian recipients of the Soviet awards. As we know, many Mongolians were awarded the Soviet awards for combat valor and labor achievements. Let's start with the very first three Orders of the Red Banner of RSFSR awarded to the following three individuals:

1. D. Sukhbaatar, Commander of the Mongolian People's Army and one of the founders of the Mongolian People's Republic (MPR), Hero of Mongolia

2. S. Magsarjav, Minister of War Ministry and the Hero of Mongolia

3. Kh. Choibalsan, Prime Minister of the MPR, Marshal of the MPR and two time Hero of the MPR

They all were awarded the Orders of the Red Banner of RSFSR on February 27, 1922 for defeating the remains of the White Guard units in Mongolia including the Baron Ungern's cavalry division.

D. Sukhbaatar was awarded the order #12319
S. Magsarjav was awarded the order #12320
Kh. Choibalsan was awarded the order #12321

The book containing documents on Sukhbaatar lists the serial numbers of the above three orders. The text in Mongolian but pretty much describes the above.

The cover page of the book. The title "Compilation of the documents on D. Sukhbaatar". Published in 1971.

Re: Serial numbers of some Soviet awards to Mongolians

Thanks, Bob.

Besides the Soviet Order of the Red Banner, some Mongolians were awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, First and Second classes. This particular order was awarded to Mongolian officers who distinguished themselves in the war against Japan in 1945. One of them is Lt. Colonel of the Border troops G. Sonjav. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class in September 1945. The Order serial number is 293166. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Military Valor in 1934 for heroism in fighting the Kazakh bandit groups on Mongol-Chinese border in Western Mongolia. Here is the man himself probably taken in 1942.

Re: Serial numbers of some Soviet awards to Mongolians

Many Mongolian People's Revolutionary Army officers were awarded the Order of the Red Star for various feats in the war against Japanese Kwantung Army in 1945. Among them was Lt. Colonel of Ministry of Internal Affairs Magsaryn Uizen. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star with Serial number 1780069.

Below is the Order of the Red Star and other awards awarded to Lt. Colonel Uizen that used to be kept in the Museum of State Security.

Re: Serial numbers of some Soviet awards to Mongolians

Along with the officers who distinguished themselves, many sergeants and soldiers of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Army displayed courage and bravery in fighting the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria and Inner Mongolia. Many soldiers were awarded the Order of Glory, 3rd Class. There is no doubt that had the war continue a little longer, there would have been Many Mongolians awarded the Order of Glory, 2nd and 1st Classes. Below is private Luvsan-Yadam who took part in the siege of the Janjkhuu fortified hills as the heavy machine gunner in the advance team. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Combat Valor of the MPR and Order of Glory 3rd Class for eliminating a number of Japanese machine gun "dzots" during the siege and shooting the Japanese officer while on patrol.

After the war, he was discharged from the Army in 1946 and worked for many years as the range-herder.

Re: Serial numbers of some Soviet awards to Mongolians

During this war, the higher military command officers were awarded the Orders of the Red Banner of USSR. Major General Ravdan, who headed the Political Department of the MPRA, was awarded the Order of the Red Banner with a serial number 287096. Below is his parade uniform with the full array of Mongolian, Soviet and North Korean awards. Ravdan, besides Army General B. Dorj and Colonel L. Dandar, was also awarded the Order of Lenin in 1971. Ravdan's Order of Lenin is serial numbered SN 405411.

Lovely pictures and stories you're sharing Urnuh - and great bits of info for future reference as well! Interesting to note on this last pic that we can clearly see on the jacket a "nr 2" Mongolian Order of Red Banner.

Re: Serial numbers of some Soviet awards to Mongolians

Thanks, Bob. Here I have more.

A few Mongolians who happened to study in Kiev, Soviet Ukraine at the beginning of the Great Patriotic war took part in the defense of the city Kiev in 1941. Major Gombosuren, who then was a military signals school, took part in the defense of Kiev. Below is his photo with the Mongolian and Soviet cross over awards including the Medal for the Defense of Kiev (top right on his right chest).
