Richie, what are the circles around your stars?

BTW, has anyone else noticed that a lot of the members here are in their 40's? Not to slight any younger members, but a lot of you are my age. Is there something about our age group that makes us want to collect?

So anyway, back to the original question: what should I look for when searching for WW2-era stars as opposed to those that were made post-war?
TIA!

Could you please post an individual scan of the third star in the top row on the first picture you posted) and a description of what it is.
Thank you,

You have a sharp eye to spot such an oddity...

I am happy that I used a sort of "disclaimer" when I wrote "but I am able to provide basic information about almost any one you wish to know about."

This one is tough... It was ground dug in the Leningrad region a few years ago. It measures 24MM across the two horizontal arms.

I have had a few opinions, but both myself and Denis Rodichev (he is a notable Russian source for good info on cap stars) feel that it may be choice number "2 of the following:

1- A detached sub-component (HOWEVER, see below about the two holes) of the rare 1943 all metal Naval "ОФИЦЕРСКИЙ СОСТАВ" shown below.

2- A variant of one of the two stars shown afterwards. It has two small holes that seem to serve the purpose of being able to be sewn through these holes to the cockarde or cap, as there seems to have no remnants of any type of attaching prongs present.

Thats it from me concerning this one...

I keep the stars in Riker mounts with built in gem jars... They are PERFECT for these little guys.

There are two sizes available as far as I know; 35MM & 42MM ID. I really wish a larger size was available, as the larger Militia cockardes and stars do not fit properly...

Richie,

Thank you for the scans and the explanation. I asked because I came across one of those a couple of weeks ago (guess where?) and no one had any idea what it could be.

TIA.

Let's try and focus on the service/parade stars for the moment please.
What are the basics of those?

The display I have is here: http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/62596-post459.html And alls I want is a couple era stars to add just a bit more spice. I don't have room for more than two or three.

OK Eric...

As far as my research (and my personal conclusions) of such has brought me thus far, the following are typical examples of (used in) wartime stars.

Of course, quality, colour of enamel, and/or paint will vary as well as deviation of regulations concerning the particular cap on which they were adorned, and how long after war's end they were still in use.

Years of release and end of manufacture vary also... I will not venture into that subject at this time as a VERY comprehensive reference could be compulated on this subject only. I believe there is one coming from Den, someday....

In any case:

1- 36M, two part construction.

2- 30MM, two part construction.

3- 30MM, one part construction.

4- 22MM

5- 30MM in mid-war green paint.

OK RichieC, thanks so much for those pointers. I will pester my favorite dealer with a request based on those parameters. :) I, uh, don't suppose you have a reliable source you'd be willing to share, do you? :o
PS. Thanks for the pix! :)
