One more thing if you would; are there post-war examples of 2-piece constructed stars IYO? ie. Would 2-piece construction be soley indicative of GPW era stars?

I was working on this post while you were reading and posted again Eric...
:smoke ---------------------------------------------------------------- Image space is limited to 50KB... Hence, their "tiny-ness", as they were of very high quality before I shrunk them down... ...sigh... In continuance: 6- 22MM in mid-war green paint. 7- 22M in gray. The paint used was supposedly "captured" and re-used on these stars & Naval Infantry helmets, among other things... 8- 22MM, again in mid-war paint. The exception on this star is that it is affixed (sewn) to the cap with thread. 9 & 10- 30MM & 22MM respectively. These have been released during recent years from ex-Soviet military stores. The original (and usual seller's "story") was that they were intended for use by Frontier Troops... yea, OK... The second story was that they originated in early 1942 before they became cost-prohibitive, hence the painted steel versions shown above were instituted. That's it...

No two piece construction stars were made (according to record) after 1940 Eric. However, the Model 1955 officer's cap cockarde was of two piece make (most were mfg'd by German companies for war reparations) until its cheesy replacement in the late 50s/early 60s with the one piece examples... This era is beyond my realm of study, so I am only assuming... Here is an image of one the "earlies" made by the Germans whilst serving their Soviet masters:

Richie, Eric,
There were also some 30mm and 22mm one-part construction stars with red paint (not enamel) produced in Leningrad during the war years. Marc |

I was showing stars that were common during the wartime, and even now in 2007r are still generally available However, I thoroughly enjoy discussing this subject, so: Whilst I am not certain about the place of production of these four, at least ONE of these "Plain-Jane's" could have very well originated in Leningrad, or in a similar place's "shop"... 1- 35MM, made of tin with brass attaching prongs. 2- 30MM, in brass. 3- 25MM, in tin. Odd size... 4- 25MM, in tin. Again, odd size, but interesting in any case...

Got stars?
I do. :)
Got these two in the mail today. The two are magnetic; both star body and prongs. The green painted one measures 35mm, the red enamelled one is 32mm. The green one is very thin and light, the red is thicker and much more solid. :thumbsup Hopefully these will be approved by members here as WW2-era and then I can mount them in a nice dispaly. :D
