This is a medal that was awarded to those who showed exemplary and self sacrificial work during the crisis of July 1954,

the damage done during the flood was significant, with infrastructure being badly damaged, agriculturale land being completley flooded, and in zwickau the water was 2.10m in the central market place.

In a lot of cases rescue was only possible by boat.

The medal itself dates from 1954 was awarded in a single class and was only awarded once,in 1957 the medal "for selfless action in the fight against disasters", would be founded with a near identical design to the 1954 medal.
