Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
Most veteran of labour medals are shiny as hell anyways, unless its the blackened type of course.
Anyways, lesson learned and at least it wasn't a Suvorov |

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
No one keeps anything permanently (basic biological fact) and one day the custody of all our phaleristic guests will transfer to another as a new link on the great chain of provenance is forged. Part of the problem lies in the false belief that these things are ours to do with as we will. The sole "owner" is/was the recipient, known or unknown, and today we are mere temporary custodians, with a duty to unearth and preserve history. We're just the people who rent these goodies for only a few years or decades. (Yes, I am ignoring the "investor" mentality here. Quite intentionally.) Some damage to these awards heals, some doesn't. But learning is never cheap. But when we stop learning, we're dead.

Everything is finite but the lifespans of certain items can be elongated.
If you need to find something you can not, there is a search option (4 characters or longer) until the forum index is produced (yes a forum index is coming but is work in process).

I agree, no "polishing" as a general rule. Warm water, mild (dish) soap and a very soft (microfiber) cloth should be the extent of it, just get the surface crud off. But, if you do decide to do something else ya just gotta do a bofer and after shot, just so we can see it.
And, I want to see what your two look like now, please?

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
No great deal of harm done, IMO.

Oxidation
Is it a terribly bad thing? My Leningrad medal has it on the backside. Is there any way to clean it? Leave it alone? Opinions?
Thanks |
