The Aurora's keel was laid down at the "New Admiralty" shipyard in St.Petersburg on 23 May 1897. The cruiser was launched on 11 May 1900 and joined the Navy of Russia in July1903.

The Aurora has a lot of History behind it, for the whole period of the Leningrad siege from 1941 to 1944 the Aurora was moored at a pier in the Oranienbaum port (the town of Lomonosov) and was constantly shelled and bombed. The hull was holed, got many leakages and sank aground, but the small crew courageously fought for the life of their ship. In July 1944 the ship was raised and taken into a dock for repair.

In 1924 the cruiser was awarded the Red Banner of the USSR Central Committee and in 1927 decorated with the order of Red Banner. Then in 1968 the cruiser Aurora was decorated with the Order of the October Revolution.

Cleber,

Post a picturee of the back and we'll be able to tell if this is a gift shop item or not.

Cleber,

I am guessing here, but I believe this may be a pin, made for collectors. I believe Rusty would like to see the back to check if there is a price there... me too :)

This is probably a WWII commemorative badge from Ukraine. It depicts the statue called "Родина Мать" or loosely translated as "Motherland". The statue is located in Kiev, it is 102 meters long, made of stainless steel and weighs 500 tons.

A bit off-topic...
While in Kiev I've heard a story about why the statue has the short sword instead for more suitable, full-sized one.
It says it was shortened, because of protests of monks and priests since the statue would have been higher than tower of Pecherskaa Lavra.
Is it true? Sounds a bit unlikely to me, but I have heard this story once again later from different source, so...

"Родина Мать"

Yes, the story is absolutely correct.
