Academy Graduation Badges

Volkspolizei Academy Graduation Badges

The Volkspolizei (German for "People's Police") was the national police of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), whose officers were commonly nicknamed VoPos. Formed following the end of World War II and abolished after German reunification, Volkspolizei officers were trained like soldiers and were highly effective in enforcing the policies of the East German government.
The Volkspolizei was effectively founded just following World War II, when the Soviet Union established central police forces in the regions of Germany it occupied (in violation of the agreements at the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference). The SVAG approved the arming of community-level police forces on October 31, 1945.
The name Volkspolizei began to be used in 1946. In August of that year, the Volkspolizei was placed under the control of the German Administration of the Interior. The first Volkspolizisten were mostly former Wehrmacht officers who had converted to communism, as well as former German members of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War.
It is not completely clear why the Soviet Union founded the Volkspolizei. The establishment of a force made up of Germans would imply that a sovereign German state would be on the way; however, Josef Stalin had no intention of pursuing this goal any further, at least in 1946.
It has been speculated that the Soviets attempted to mould East German society so as to be similar to the Soviet Union's. In the Soviet Union, uniformed troops assigned to tactical groups to combat counterrevolution were subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior, and the Volkspolizei was organised in the same fashion.
By November 1946, the Volkspolizei had more than 45,000 officers. In that same month the SVAG authorised the creation of the Border Police, 3,000 men who were charged with preventing mass emigration into West Germany. In December, the Transportpolizei was established.

Training centres:

University of the VP, Berlin-Biesdorf (Cecilienstrasse)
Technical school of the MdI "Heinrich Rau", Radebeul
Technical school of the MdI, "William Pieck" Aschersleben/Ballenstedt
Officer university "Bereitschaften" "Artur Becker", Dresden (Neuländer Str. 60)
Humboldt university to Berlin/section Kriminalistik

The earlier versions of the "Karl Liebknecht" and "Artur Becker" Academy badges ( 1977-1987) were higher quality with enamel. From 1987 to 1990 they were lacquered with the clearcover plastic coating.
The later, Civilian Highschool badge (1985-1990) is only found as a lacquered version.

Below are the three VOPO Academy badges, from left to right:

Civilian Highschool
"Artur Becker" Academy.
"Karl Liebknecht" Academy

Wilhelm Pieck Academy Graduation Badge

The "Wilhelm Pieck" Militärpolitische Hochschule der NVA (MPHS) was located in in Berlin - Grünau.
This Academy was for NVA officers who wanted to follow an NVA political career.
After Graduation from the MPHS they could be promoted to "Stellvertreter" of the Battalion Commander or work in the Arbeitsgruppe "Polit" of a Regiment, Brigade or the equivilant.
They were not only responsible for the Political training of the soldiers, also they were for the organisation of the Culture and Freizeit of the soldiers in their Regiment, Brigade etc. Also they helped the Commander by the organisation of "Wettbewerbe" and were responsible for any other duties the Commander thought fitting.
MPHS students were also able to study in Military Academies, either at the MAK in Dresden or Moskau.

Wilhelm Pieck was born January 3, 1876 in the eastern part of Guben, Germany, which is now Gubin and part of Poland. While he initially went to school to become a carpenter, the combination of world events, determined ideology, and political ambition led Pieck to a life of party leadership.
In 1949 Pieck was elected President of the newly-established German Democratic Republic (GDR), and was contrary to Communist boss Walter Ulbricht, the first secretary of the Council of State, a very popular president. Pieck served as the only president of the GDR until his death in 1960. Pieck's ideology enabled him to obtain and maintain his posts in politics due to Stalin's overall trust in him. Stalin was confident in Pieck's ability to impress Stalinism abroad, especially in divided German country between the Eastern and Western political systems.

Friedrich Engels Military Academy

This was the highest institution of military education in the GDR.
Officialy founded on the basis of the former "Hochschule für Offiziere" of the KVP on 5th January 1959 in Dresden. Interestingly the Commander of the school from 1953-1958 before it changed was Wehrmacht Oberst Wilhelm Adam ( NVA Generalmajor ) the former adjutant of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad under General Field Marshal Paulus. Adam won his Knights Cross on the 17th December 1942.
In December 1959 the training of(Luftstreitkräfte/Luftverteidigung ,LSK/LV) Air Force and Air Defense officers began.

Commanders of the Academy ( From 1st September Chief of the Academy)

Oberst Wilhelm Adam (1953-1958)
Generalmajor Heinrich Dollwetzel (1st Oct 1958-30th Sep 1959)
Generalmajor Fritz Johne (1st Oct 1959-31st May 1963)
Generalmajor Heinrich Heitsch (1st June 1963-30th Apr 1964)
Generalmajor Hans Wiesner (1st May 1964-10th Dec 1986)
Generalleutnant Manfred Gehmert (11th Dec 1986-28th Feb 1990)
Generalleutnant Hans Süß (1st Mar 1990-30th Sep 1990)
Oberst Gerhard Kolitsch (1st Oct 1990-2nd Oct 1990)

Friedrich Engels

Friedrich Engels (November 28, 1820, Wuppertal – August 5, 1895, London), was a 19th-century German political philosopher who developed the communist theory alongside his better-known friend Karl Marx, co-authoring The Communist Manifesto (1848). Engels also edited several volumes of Das Kapital after Marx's death.

Variations

(1962- 1975) Typical for all the early GDR Academy Badges the medallion was placed central in the badge. It was emamelled and had the wording Military academy on the top edge. Screwback.

(1975-1985) The second generation Academy Badges had the medallion in the top half of the Badge. Below are the letters NVA and it was enamelled. Screwback

(1985-1986) This badge had the same design but it was lacquered. Screwback.

(1987-1990) This was the last variation of the badge and only had the medallion. This type was lacquered and was produced in screwback and pinback.

NVA Career Officer Academy Graduate Badge

Beginning in 1987, officers making a career in the East German armed forces were entitled to receive diplomas and to wear this badge upon graduating from an officer training school, loosely equivalent to American OCS/ Officer Candidate School. (Degrees from civilian institutions of higher learning were also recognized). The triangle-shaped badge is white with red trim, with the DDR’s coat of arms in gold in the center.

Military Technical School or Civilian University Graduate Badge

This badge was also introduced in 1987 to be worn by officers who graduated either with a certificate from a technical school or diploma from a civilian university or equivalent. The triangle-shaped badge is red with white trim, with the DDR’s coat of arms in gold in the center.

Academy Badge of the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense

This exceptional badge was intended for graduates of officer training schools and various specialized military training programs during the period in 1990 when the NVA was in the process of being disbanded. By some estimates, only 400 of the badges were made; whether any were actually awarded is uncertain. The badge is already rare and destined to become much more so in the future. The triangle-shaped badge is white with red trim, and features the profile of an NVA soldier in place of the traditional DDR coat of arms.

NVA “Friedrich Engels” Academy Badge, 1975-1986

The Engels Academy was East Germany’s premium school for training future leaders of its armed forces. Attendance at the school was essential for officers who wanted to rise to command positions in the NVA. The diamond-shaped badge is red with white trim, and features Friedrich Engels' image on the circular gold center piece. The letters “NVA” distinguish the badge from its earlier (with the word "MILITÄRAKADEMIE") and later (lacking "NVA" and "MILITÄRAKADEMIE") counterparts.

You most likely mean "white with red trim", given the picture you posted.

Great thread!

Does anyone have an idea as to what this might be? All that I know is that it's a DDR officer's academy badge. Thanks in advance.
