I knew I was going to regret not going to OMSA this year. Looks like there was a lot of interesting stuff to see. I hope you guys post more pictures for those of us who couldn't make it. I like the picture with Paul in the background doing his thing. So, who's going to the Max Show?

All the best,

Doug

For the Forum members that haven't met others...

Here's who's who in the pictures:

Top picture, to the left Alex S. from Ohio. next to him is Eugene and the gentlemen on far right in jeans and a fanny pack is Paul McDaniel.

Picture above, the gentlemen in Prada or was it Gucci glasses and a $5 Wallmart belt is Mr. ******.

Attendance

When I see the pictures of the OMSA Convention, I am struck by the lack of visitors. Were the pictures taken at a special time (like lunch break) or was the attendance low?

My pics, at least were taken at a quiet time intentionally, to show medals not mobs. But remember that OMSA is three and ahalf days, so after the first day's freeding frenzy, it does get a bit sparse at times.

While replying to the Donbass thread, I remembered something very interesting Dealer #3 was doing in his free time...

In the thread regarding the Donbass Medal Tal had a suspicion that the medal had a later, aluminum suspension and that was one of the reasons he thought it might be fake...

Well:

When I came up to this dealer he had 4 piles off to the side of the table, a stack of medals, a stack of ribbons, a stack of rings and one of the suspensions. I asked him why he was doing it. After a lengthy conversation I learned that the easiest was to smuggle medals from FSU (Former Soviet Union) was in pieces.

It makes sense... No one in FSU cares about suspensions, rings and ribbons; they only care about medals leaving the country.

So, the point I was trying to make was: Just because a medal has a brand new suspension with a ribbon and a wrong ring doesn't mean it's fake!!!

Rusty.

P.S. He was putting together about several hundreed medals.

In regards to Rusty's last post... I thought that was almost standard practice! - I know several dealers who receive stuff (or bring stuff) over to the states, and the ribbons/bars have been removed for ease of transport (or what have you...)

Of course it doesn't mean the medals are a fake...but it is also a shame (my opinion), since the original ribbons/bars often get separated from the medals when this happens.

Ideally, one would like to have the original ribbons.

Sometimes the ribbons offer a unique insight about the group. For instance, I have one groups where I had the ribbons lab tested ...just to verify my suspicions... blood.

OVMS Show of Shows

I hope every one can mark Feb 19-22, 2004 on their calendar! These are the dates for the next Show of Shows. For anyone who may not be familiar with it, the SoS is one of...if not the...biggest military shows in the world! It runs concurrent with National Gun Day. I hope we can have a great turnout.

OH yeah....I guess it would help if I were to mention that the show is in Louisville, Ky (my hometown) at the Ky Fair & Expo Ctr. Feel free to email me or PM for details about the show or the OVMS.
