Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

I was looking for safe plastic sleeves some time ago, but couldn't find anything for medals with a guarantee from the seller. So I used the idea from our fellow forum member Pobeda. You can see it in the link below.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

Thanks for the nice shoutout. I am constantly perfecting my over-engineered (but archivally safe) storage method.

Here's my latest method: it requires Saflips 2x2 coin flips and the soft tall baseball card sleeves, but also a pair of little scissors.

First, I cut a little "T-shape" on top, this really varies on suspension type. This medal has a newer aluminum suspension so I cut the T-shape deeper than on older suspensions.

Second, I insert the medal into the flip while letting the original pin rest on the T-section.

top view--as you see the ribbon is on the outside of the sturdy Saflip while the medal is inside the sleeve; I then insert it into the baseball tall sleeve and seal with a little label. I have an acid-free pen I can subsequently use if I choose to research the medal.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

This method works with screwback medals too, you just need a hole puncher!

Unfortunately there's no way for the soft sleeve to not bunch up, but storing these early Soviet and Mongolian medals is challenging.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

I use a similar method with Veteran Znachki--but if the reverse is blank I'll usually just use acid-free black cardstock, let the badge hang down from its original pin attachment, and insert into the PVC-free baseball sleeve before putting them all into a 3x2 archivally safe album pages.

Thanks for reading!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

Very nice and very safe!

I like the idea of the labels, im increasingly losing track of which of my awards and who they were awarded too.

Screwbacks are the main issue, those damn screwposts weren't made to be filed flat!

Thanks for sharing some tips, George!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

What I do with screws is.... Wind them as far out as they can go (which usually leaves a flat screwplate with a filled hole).

Mind you, I also have a good few frames.... Punch a hole and screw them on to enjoy.

Old jewellery boxes can work for storage too.
