Re: How to display Soviet awards
George, though I've never hear of "wooden bookmarks," I get the way you did it and they look good. Nice and simple.
One question: what about the backs? How do you actually display them (on the wall, on a flat surface, etc.? I ask because I know what happens when the screws go through and how much of them stick out of the other side, which makes them very difficult to do anything with outside of frames. So, what's your secret? Phillip

Re: How to display Soviet awards
Hi Phillip, you are right of course--the screws come out on the other side of the wooden bookmarks. The bookmarks end up standing at a 30 degree angle to the surface. I do lie them flat and they stand on their own just a tad. I need to figure out how to stand them up at a higher angle--I have some ideas, but haven't tinkered with it yet. Here's an amateur rendition of how it appears from the side--my apologies I'm not an artiste.

Re: How to display Soviet awards
Nice job, George! And it's good to see some of the newer blood here adding their goodies.
How about using a small plate stand to prop that up? You know, the kinda 'J' shaped thingee that's hinged...has the two 'J's at a 45º angle. I think that would look like the bee's knees on a desk or curio cabinet.

Re: How to display Soviet awards
Thanks Eric! I'll have to try that. They sell clear plastic ones that will be perfect here, good idea.
My awards collection is still in amateur mode, but I do have a few trays full of medals in clear medal pockets. I use the Lighthouse stackable cases, great stuff! I am considering switching to an album system too, the medal sleeves fit nicely in a PVC-free trading card album like this one. Cheers, George |

Re: How to display Soviet awards
Some things are harder to display than others (Army, Air Force, and Navy parade daggers)

Re: How to display Soviet awards
Eric is the master of great display ideas. Just go back through this thread and you will see what I mean.
Jeffrey, the daggers look great. The naval one I was given years ago as a gift was simply hung on the wall by the first brass loop - until the humidity down here started to corrode parts of the brass on the sheath I couldn't see. Now it is in a silicone coated gun "sock" until I think of a better way to display it sans air. Phillip
