Help needed to id these items
Would appreciate any help anyone can give in identifying these hats and greatcoat. We are totally new to this and just obtained these and really don't know what they are.
Other photos can be obtained if needed. |

Re: Help needed to id these items
Welcome Ivan,
The hats are for army everyday/service and parade respectively. The great coat has the insignia of an MVD major. The MVD is very roughly equivalent to the FBI. It was/is a national police force and includes the fire brigades as well. If you have any questions about the MVD, just send me a PM or email. Phillip

Re: Help needed to id these items
Hello Ivan,
Welcome to the forum. The first cap is a service cap, circa 1980’s, for an MVD officer. The second cap is a parade cap for an officer in the armor or artillery service of the Soviet Army, also circa 1980’s. The overcoat is for a Major in the MVD...the first cap would go well with it for making a display of an MVD officer of the 1980’s. Email / PM deValcourt for any info you might need on the MVD, he is an expert. DougD |

Re: Help needed to id these items
Doug, are you sure the overcoat is for an MVD major? To me looks like normal red rather than brick red. I have an MVD overcoat and the colors do look different in pictures.

Re: Help needed to id these items
Esteban,
You might be correct; the red looks dark to me, but I could be wrong and it might be the regular army red. I have always found it difficult to differentiate the two reds. DougD |

Re: Help needed to id these items
Here´s a picture of my overcoat´s shoulderboard to compare. The picture is taken in natural light, without flash.

Re: Help needed to id these items
Guys, you know I'm not the uniform expert, but the MVD shoulder boards are unique to my eye - a bluish-green color and an almost plastic appearance. They didn't even change them after 1991 and I saw them every day on the streets, in the Metro, walking their beats, etc. I am 99% certain that both Esteban's and Ivan's shoulder boards are from the same type of uniform. What is more likely is that the collar tabs were replaced on the coat (those didn't change right away either. Only in the last 10 years or so did they stop using the tabs and just the insignia). Given the somewhat blurry photos of the first set, I'd think that has more to do with any differences you see.:)

Re: Help needed to id these items
Sorry the photos were not the best, they were taken in a bit of a hurry. Hopefully these taken today in daylight (no flash) will help. For what its worth, in my opinion the red is "brick red" and is certainly a different shade to that of the piping on the "parade" hat.
