Red Star.

These are weights of orders I've collected over the past 2 years. I'll post one thread for each award. All were weighed with the screwback off. I use a Pocket-Tech digital scale by Gram-Precision. Some were weighed over a year later to check the accuracy of my results and all were 100% accurate.

Order Name/Class-----Serial Number------Weight in grams

Red Star 206739 25.8
Red Star 302418 24.7 (damaged enamel)
Red Star 438847 28.1
Red Star 456381 26
Red Star 486154 26.9
Red Star 556788 26
Red Star 653861 28.4
Red Star (duplicate) 820406 30.1
Red Star 867457 30.9
Red Star 907436 31.3
Red Star 1693661 31.0
Red Star 2919272 30.2
Red Star 3021912 31.2
Red Star 3032239 29.6
Red Star 3212900 30.6

From McDaniels book...

Hi Art, interesting to see how the weight differs
I have a late Red Star no 3490342 and its 30.5 gram

Does anybody out there have a weight for a Defence of Odessa ?
I bought one that looks suspect, its a little bit thicker than other
similar medals and probably heavier.

Thanks for this Super Forum !

Bayoswede,

This is a lot of fun. I like the Red Star. You can collect many of them, they are inexpensive ( relatively speaking ) and they always look good. I'll keep posting weights as I get them. I also want to start measuring my awards. See the reply I left for you in the Order of the Patriotic War thread, maybe you're interested.

I weighed the Odessa medal and it comes out to 17.3 grams.

I've been experimenting with how I might be able to weigh my suspended orders. I've been having mixed results. I can't keep the suspension supported enough so that the weight on the scale is entirely the medallion and not the suspension with the medallion. It always seems to shift and affect my measurements.

Red Star

Hi
I have an Order Of The Red Star.
In looking through thr variations it doesn't seem to fit.
It is curved, with a large mint mark that is straight on two lines with the mint mark being dark & deep and the ABOP being light.
I thought it was a type 2 but the mint mark is not curved, (even slightly). the serial number is strange as well; it goes 10321?1.
The second to last number looks like an f or maybe a 7 with a small line?
Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi,

There actually many minor variations of the Red Star - curved, concave, flat, thin, thick, etc., and many mint mark variations. Looks like you have one of them.

Red Star

The early Red Stars were hard earned. This is my 5 digit, red star probably Finnish War. Note it has an earlier number than observed by Paul McDaniel.

The enamel is in perfect condition.

Here is a close up of the Number and Mint Mark. Eyeball wise the number is sharp.

The mint mark is close to the rivet, the rivet is in the correct place.

I see no marks of erasure to alter mint mark or serial number area (the area is not smooth).

However I believe this forum should be used as a tool to warn others and if you think this is fake, point out its errors or suspicions for others education.

regards Chris

Red Star

Here it is. The etching is hardly visible because of the patina, but there is a date, name, and the operation it was awarded for. This Red Star is part of a documented group.

I picked this up this week..The Red Star on the right, #556788, weight 26g, average of 47mm from star tip to tip, 3.6mm screwpost..the enamel ends almost exactly flush with the edge, very very small flared edge..anyone see something like this before or am I just looking at this thing to long? Note full flared edge star on left.

You've sent me 2 similar Red Stars

Art,

you sent me 2 smilar Red Stars with the "Kandybin-group". The right one - sharp and pointed - is WW II production and the left one - not so dangerous - is a post WW II production. I have also 2 other pointed and not-pointed Red Stars in my collection.

That's my modest theory.

Regards from Vienna

Hmmm, I must have been looking at it from a strange angle. Well, into the Serial number database it goes!

Other set of images sent to me by Alex..

nice...fairly high number for this type/mint mark size, McDaniel lists highest as 10,428.
