Wife: Raisa Petrovna Markevich Short, concrete description of the personal combat feat or merits: Working as chief of the Organization and Planning Section of the Rear Area Staff of the division, comrade Markevich showed himself a capable organizer and an energetic worker who knows his job well. During the division’s period of offensive combat, when division’s units were advance rapidly and low on fuel, he managed to organize the uninterrupted supply of food and ammunition and the evacuation of the wounded from the battlefield. During the period between June 26 and July 6, 1944 the rear relocated five times over a distance of 250 kilometers, but the availability and transportation of goods was arranged in a timely manner. During the period of offensive combat between August and September the rear relocated thirteen times over a distance of 250 kilometers, but the supply and transportation were arranged smoothly once again. During the fighting to seize the city of Riga, comrade Markevich constantly saw himself on mined roads, fired at by the enemy, between October 1 and 14, 1944. He personally organized the quick redistribution of ammunition (up to 30 trucks every twenty-four hours) and the evacuation of the wounded (up to 80 men every day), he established the communications and led the operational activities, and the planning of the division’s rear, which contributed to the accomplishment of the division’s mission to seize the city of Riga. For his activities, which contributed to the combat successes of the division, he deserves the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class.
