Hi Bill, each of these gents is listed as being born in a different place. So likely different people.

Thanks, Scott, I am left wondering then which, if either, may be the Leonid Vasilievich Subbotin associated with these labor documents. The birth year on the Bravery citation is 1925, as is one of the 1985 Orders of the Patriotic War in 2nd Class. Your contribution certainly narrows the search a bit.

This is the main reason why I personally do not prefer Russian or Ukrainian recipients. No matter how brave they may be, they are a bugger to track down.

Hi Bill, upon further digging it looks like the first two gents are the same person. It was confusing at first because there is no longer a Chermoz Rayon--but it's now part of Permskaya Oblast

This village has a memorial to those who "fought for their motherland," looks like the surname Subbotin was extremely popular here. Not an exact match, maybe an omission or misspelling etc. (pic attached)

His bravery medal has a very cool citation, he served in the 1st Red Banner Tank brigade. The award is for fighting the Finns, while serving as tank suport infantry (desantnik) from his tank he discovered and destroyed three finnish riflemen who were firing at the tanks and support. He also destroyed two pillboxes from an anti-tank rifle.


Still inconclusive that it's the same as your gent though, many times these countrymen went back to their village to live out their days. But maybe the fact that the name isn't listed on the memorial is evidence that he moved away, perhaps as far as the Ukraine. I like that theory. :)
