Laminated Documents - any ideas ?

Hello guys,

I have recently bought a set of some orders and medals given to the same person; but all paper items (doc for Odessa, Stalingrad and Caucasus) have been laminated in plastic sheets - is there any possibility to remove the plastic to "free" the documents without damaging / destroying them ?

Thank you very much,

Jens*

Highly unlikely that you can remove the lamination without damage. During lamination the plastic usually bonds to the surface of the paper.

I, too, fear the damage has been done and cannot be undone. You have to hope it was done by the recipient and not by some idiot collector.

Apart from philosophical issues, I can't really see any difference here; in both cases, the documents have been irremediably damaged.

Re: Laminated Documents - any ideas ?

Personally, I think it is a good bit more than "just" a "philosophical" issue". I tend to be more forgiving to what the owner of these things (the recipient) may have done to them. If he (she) wanted to polish them to smooth chunks of metal, if he wanted to drool food and drink all over the ribbon, of if he wanted to embalm his documents in plastic it may be numismatically unfortunate, but it was his right. I would find such behavior by a later custodian who misunderstood these historical items as his (her) private property to be inexcusable. I would deeply regret the first sort of behavior although it is part of the history of the item, but I would reconsider my stance on capital punishment in the second case.

But, yes, in this case the end result is the same.

Why do you want to remove docs from plastic?
If you don't like these docs, why did you buy them?

Re: Laminated Documents - any ideas ?

I guess in the end the lamination becomes part of their history..... a very sad part

Apart from damaging the the documents my worry has always been that lamination could be used to stop close examination of details making it more difficult to check their validity.

Would like to take a peak at the items in question. That might stop the speculation.
