Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

I have recently aquired this photographs as war time photos of Yugoslav partizans. It seems to me, that this description is correct.
They are also described as what seems to be Vbrig(ade) XIXdiv(ision) and one - VIbrig(ade.)
Can anyone provide info on this units?
Unfortunately, Yugoslav partisan movement is covered only in the parts that are related to the polish members of it in the literature that is available in Poland.

Re: Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

XIX division of Jugoslav army was formed in the first half of 1943. Emediately after forming was in the battles with germans between Knin and Zadar (now in Croatia). Was fighting mainly in Dalmatia, on the mounatin Velebit and in Lika. At the end of the WW II was fighting near Rijeka and against german 97. corps near Ilirska Bistrica (now in Slovenia).

Re: Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

Im trying to find out more about Yugoslavian partisans in WW2. My great grandfather was involved in Special Operations in a Halifax bomber to drop supplies and people to the Partisans in Yugoslavia and Italy and Albania but he was unfortunately shot down and killed in 1944.

Id like to find out more about the people he was trying to help.

I would post the full story, but this is a soviet forum, not a British RAF one!

Cheers,

Tom

Re: Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

Well, but this is a Yugoslav subforum, and judging from the year, he was most likely helping Tito's partisans which makes this a part of the SFRY (pre)history, so don't hesitate to share the story.

As for the partisans - Tito's partisan army is considered the best organised and the largest partisan organisation in Europe (the second feathure is, however, disputable when we consider the numbers of partisans in the SU, on the other hand, A. Gogun in his book on partisans in Ukraine states, that soviet partisans should be rather considered bad-trained commandos, not partisans). Apart from them, there was also the royalist partisan movement - the chetniks. Contrary to the popular belief, they were not allied to Germans, their alliances with the nazis started very late, when they saw that it's Tito and Stalin who will decide about the future of the country and when they lost British support (which was then given to Tito).

Re: Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

As I explained above, my Great Grandfather was a Flight Engineer in 148 Squadron based out of Brindisi in Southern Italy.

Here he is with his crew in the bottom left hand corner:

JP237 Crew.jpg

His crew were part of “S.O.E”, simply Special Operations, Assisting the Partisans in various countries across Europe. Be that by dropping, supplies, ammunition, spies or evacuating the wounded or important people. Due to the sensitive nature of these missions it’s very difficult to ascertain, even now, exactly what they got up to.

The following is a list of the Operations he was involved in with the crew pictured above. In the text there are a lot of abbreviations. “Nickels” Shortened to “N” in the mission descriptions. This meant Bombs! “C” is Crates and “P” is Packages, exactly what were in them, who knows?!

April:
4th – 5th
Halifax JP226 left Brindisi at 20.03 on Operation Sculptor 102 dropping 15 containers and 13 packages at Shepr. 200lbs "Nickels" were dropped at Tepekene before landing at 22.40.
6th – 7th
JP226 left 19.34 on Operation Entanglement 13. Cloud cover prevented containers and packages being dropped, but 900lbs N. were dropped on Elbasan. Landed 23.35.
14th – 15th
JN925 left 19.45 on Operation 237B. 9 c. and 12 p. dropped at 42.15N. 21.59E. Dropped 200lbs N. on Mostar. Landed 06.35.
16th – 17th
JP226 left 19.31 on Operation 312. Dropped 9c and 12p at 50.57N. 21.45E. Landed 05.41.
18th – 17th
JP226 left 00.02 on Operation Entanglement 102. Target visited twice but no "reception" (i.e. no markers/signals from below to indicate that the intended recipients of the containers and packages were waiting below), so the mission was terminated. Landed 06.02.
22nd – 23rd
JP226 left 20.34 on Operation Addlethorpe 2. Dropped 15c and 6p at 46.09N. 11.58E. and 1500lbs N. at Trevisio. Landed 04.30.
22nd – 24th
JP161 left 20.03 on Operation Askorn 2. Dropped 15c and 6p at 44.17N. 10.15E. and 860lbs N. at Viaggia. Landed 04.55.
25th – 26th
JP226 left 19.50 on Operation PWE and flew over the Rumanian towns of Craiova, Sinaia, Ploesti, Targoviste and Pitesto. Notes by the Commanding Officer elsewhere in the file show that this mission was intended to inflame anti-German resistance behind the German front-line by scattering leaflets. These would explain to the population that the Russian army was pressing forward and that Rumania's liberation would be speeded up if assisted by Rumanians. Rumania was one of the last remaining sources of petroleum for the Germans so of special importance.
27th – 28th
JP226 left at 21.12 on Operation 4220, dropping 12c and 12p at 49.50N. 22.16E. - Also 1000lbs N. at Jaszbereny.

left 221.10 on Op. Terrier 1. Dropped 15c. and 11p. at 45.50N 09.52E. 1000lbs N. at Verona. Landed 04.28.

June 24
The secret report on the fatal mission shows that the Halifax II aircraft JP237 took off at 20.11 hrs on "Operation Sound 1". Instead of a landing time, a note states "Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it is presumed lost."
"13 aircraft were scheduled for ops but 3 had to be cancelled owing to technical trouble. Of the remaining 10, 6 were successful and one is missing. Their target was a new one in N. Italy and nothing was heard from him after take off”

Unfortunatley, their plane was shot down by Anti Aircraft fire in Santa Maria Del Taro in Northern Italy.

Through trawling the internet, I have come across a man who lives near the site of the crash who has made a shrine to the “Angels of the Mountain” as he calls them and spends a lot of his time out with his metal detector uncovering the wreckage from that fateful night and speaking to the people of the town that were alive to remember the night. Below is a picture of the shrine he has made using bits of the wreckage.

Sorry if this has drifted wildly off topic, but I just like to share my story of a man who I would dearly have loved to meet.

Cheers,

Tom

Re: Partisan (?) photographs - info on unit?

The Special Operations Executive certainly had some "interesting" interactions in the Balkans (and other places). Mad Jack Churchill is one to research if anyone is interested in British intervention in Yugoslavia.

It's nice to be able to find pictures and records of family members (and other service personnel) and be able to present them.

This does make me feel a little old though as I have a funeral card here of my Great Grandfather who died of old age 9th January 1913 so he didn't quite have the chance to help partisans of any sort.

The records of SOE's actions are pretty much well and truly open now but this is certainly not the case for all British exploits during the war with Germany, Japan, Italy, etc. I have a group to a BIGOT that can not be declassified for at least 2 more years but may continue to be classified after the 70 year period. Some very interesting things that it is as yet illegal to mention (although if the Germans don't know we're coming by now there must be a very serious problem).

Now back to the topic of Partisans, does anyone know of British service personnel that were awarded with Partisan awards from either Yugoslavia or Albania? Or were we just too imperial for the communists we were assisting?
