Re: My Afghan stuff ...

Most of the boxes usually fall at the first hurdle and don't last beyond issue. Put the award on your chest and the box in the bin (either by those handing out the award or those just receiving it). Very unlike many other nations' awards where you get a leather bound gold trimmed case that the award spends its entire life in whilst tucked away in a drawer.

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

Dat, that is incredibly impressive! :thumbsup

Have you perchance ever come across documents? How about Soviet awards to Afghans?

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks for sharing that thread, Ed. Good to know about. But to clarify, by documents I was inquiring after supply over there.

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

All of mine were sourced out of Kabul (actually a couple from Jelalabad), mostly directly from dealers in "Chicken Street".

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

I would suggest that generally paperwork from highly literate peaceful places is considerably more likely to survive and find its way onto the market than in war-torn less literate places.

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

Hello,

I have never seen any associated documents for sale. Medal73 is correct, Kabul and Chicken Street are the places to go find great stuff for sale. I think that most of the vendors on Bagram are from Kabul or have shops on Chicken Street.

On my last deployment, I only saw three medals worth purchasing :-(

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

I have asked British Soldiers (ranks from Private to Major) being deployed to Afghanistan to see what they can pick up for me over the last year with absolutely no success. Mind you it is very unlikely that there will be any available in a refrigerated warehouse at Camp Bastian.

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

Most of mine were bought on Kabul in 2002/2003 by a french soldier. When he was deployed again 2 years later, he couldn't find anything. Some were bought in Russia in mint condition.

Re: My Afghan stuff ...

I also forgot to mention (but have already posted) that some Russian Organisations have continued to produce Afghan award documents. Not really "fake" but not "legit" either. "Quasi" may be the word.
