Re: Starshina Leonid Aleksandrovich Sheffer, MVD.

It would be awesome to reunite the group! Especially with the news Commie Luigi posted above! :D

I do not have the ability to type in Russian. Can someone please type his name and I will look for that forum to reach out to the seller. Maybe I could work something out with the seller or buyer. I bet that this was a huge grouping!

I would love to know the other medals that are missing.

Here are the links (I don't know why there are two. They're the same thing.):

VoG, 30 Years Red Army, 40 Years Red Army, 20 Years of Victory. This thread is 4 years old, so slim chance of recovery I think. I sent the seller an email just in case. Fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Alex

PS - it's Comrade Mario :D Luigi is the green one.

Oh, the VV MVD were very well "armed" with rifles and other small arms. There are a number of rifle regiments that started at NKVD units during WWII and "evolved" into VV MVD or even VV MGB after 1946. They, like members of the NKVD were all eligible to recieve the armed forces jubilee awards mentioned just above.

And, of course, the VV MVD were the spearhead in both Chechen wars.

Re: Starshina Leonid Aleksandrovich Sheffer, MVD.

Even before the NVKD the GRU led the way into China in the 20's. I was of course referring to classification as an "Armed Force" rather than actually holding a weapon.

The "30 Years Of Armed Forces" in the collection marked MVD are to either "Troops" of one sort or another or issued by MVD "Lagers" without mentioning the designation of the forces there (possibly some other variations but I don't have all resources on hand). They will all be posted with time.

The shuffling of People's Commissariats into Ministries, the transition from war to peace (including demobilisation) and the fact that someone had to be in service to be awarded the "30 Years" makes for some interesting and often confusing awards.

It's a shame there isn't currently a scan of Sheffer's to shine a little light onto him.

LOL! I could never keep those guys straight!

Thank you for contacting the seller. It would be cool if he still has them. That means that he would have had all of the anniversary medals. Talk about a full house.

From what I know, they were considered a part of the Soviet Armed Forces, but not the Soviet Army.
Conscripts were registered at the same voenkomaty, and were chosen from the very same pool as those to go to the Army. They would also recieve AF anniversary medals. Even tough they were under different ministery, they did count as members of the Armed Forces. The same applies to the Border Guards (who for the longest period were under the KGB), and to other KGB troops (but troops, not all the KGB personnel).
When the manpower of the Soviet Armed Forces was given, it usually inclouded both VV MVD and PV KGB, at least that is what gen. Jaruzelski suggestes in one of his books and I "think" he knows what he is talking about.

Re: Starshina Leonid Aleksandrovich Sheffer, MVD.

I found another "30 Years" to a Lieutenant (formerly Guards Jr-LT) , signed by the deputy minister of internal affairs which once again doesn't really specify too much.

Those documents have arrived!!! I will post another photo of the entire grouping. Pretty exciting, despite the passage of much time.
