Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

I have bought from the seller in the past with no problems. Plus he has a good return policy.

Brendan:)

Stalingrad

I just picked this up in Tashkent. I believe it's good, so I'm posting here for you guys to see. The suspension is older two-piece brass/steel suspension, and the connecting link is welded/soldered closed. It's the only "old" Stalingrad I've seen with numbers. I once passed on a set of V3 medals that included a numbered Stalingrad because I didn't think they were good (I posted photos of those here somewhere in the forum), but I can't remember how that discussion went.

Re: Numbered Defense of Stalingrad

Kirchgoens,

As usual with these, the medal is original. Now, regarding the stamped digits, it is anyone's guess :(

Re: Numbered Defense of Stalingrad

Interesting to say the least. There is some precedence for these serial numbered medals. I believe it's generally thought that the number in the award booklet was stamped on the medal itself.
I'd theorize that an individual with access to numbered punches did this himself, for himself.
Who's got some images of similar items to share? :)

Re: Numbered Defense of Stalingrad

These are believed to have been done at the unit level and reflect the number on the award certificate. This was done back in the days when serial-numbered pieces really meant something and it was a way to give a little extra prestige to the campaign medal. I've got a Moscow and Stalingrad (alas, no photos) that I believe are authentic.

Bottom line is there is less standardization on these than concerning duplicate awardings and we all know what a wild West that subject is. The same goes for gold-plated medals. Unfortunately there is no way to tell short of seeing a photograph of a unit actually stamping these things or a war-era dated photo of such a serial-numbered campaign medal.

If my memory serves me correctly, I once saw a numbered campaign medal where the number matched the document, but even then that didn't prove anything conclusively b/c it would be easy to repeat any document's number with a set of modern day punches.

I've only seen six of these, four of which I would consider authentic.

Another theory goes that those medal got stamped at the shops mounting medals on milti-place suspensions.

Desantnik, do you have any pictures to post? Would love to see them.

Sorry. There can't be any photos for at least another two years. They're in storage. I did buy both prior to '95 before a lot of fantasy pieces starting showing up.

I've also got a RB with a beautiful "No 2" engraved at the top. I don't know if that is how someone (the mint?) originally indicated a duplicate or how or why it got there. Again, no pictures for a couple of years:(
