Naval Guards Badge
Does anyone know what's that this Hero SU sailor has right under two GPW orders?
It looks like a suspension from some award. What does it mean? |

That signifies that the sailor served on a vessel honored by the "guards" designation.

Why didn't they use the traditional Guards badge for him?

New World,
The Navy was developing this badge independently from the Army, and in 1943 they had already replaced it with the standard issue. Alexei |

Guards Badge.
What may not be evident from photos or descriptions is the wider orange-black ribbon is from the rimless Soviet naval "Donald Duck" hat and not the typical, run-of-the-mill Victory over Germany Medal (or Order of Glory) ribbon.
I included below the ordinary St. George/Order of Glory/Victory over Germany Medal ribbon both for scale and comparison. |
