Re: Enlisted long-service badges

Well, folks......after a looooong time searching for an Air Force & Navy badge in the older style I finally hit pay-dirt. To those who say 'Ya can't find nothin' good on the ebay' I say you are a putz. ;)

So for your viewing pleasure here are all three early versions. :thumbsup

Note the different paint colors on the wings; I've seen this variation before. Also, in the second image I've flipped up the numbered pendant on the bottom badge; if ya squint really hard you can see how relatively thick the pendant is. Sometimes pendants can be thinner.
I've also noticed three different shapes of the pendants; diamond and heart-shaped on para jump badges and the roughly triangular pendants seen here.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges

Nice!

Sadly the badge (naval) has gone astray from a submariner whose group lives with me. (Also many pictures and documents on his father and his mother's medal.)

What is the first award in the ribbon bar? Looks like a Defense of Leningrad, but then comes 250th anniversary Leningrad (it seems), but no Victory medal? Do you have the list of what awards he got?

The badge should be possible to replace.

A very good question. And one that has puzzled me. The ribbon bar (bad image) shown below seems to show: Defence of Leningrad, Leningrad Jubilee, Army 30, Army 40, Service 3rd Class. Nasty photo, curved plastic ribbon bar (which is not with the group). None of the other document photos show ribbons. And, of course, he wears them badly out of ofter (but as a very proud Leningrad resident - his mother also got the defence medal). Sadly, only the documents for Defence of Leningrad and the long service medal are present with the group.

I think these bridge the gap between enlistment and the initial awarding of the 10 years long service medal.
I'd surmise that these were only issued with pendants numbered 1 through 9, and that after 9 years you'd get the Long Servise Medal. But, perusing one of Boev's badges books I see a "10" and an "11" numbered pendant. Maybe the soldier wanted everyone to know just exactly how long he'd survived in the armed forces?

No, I don't think so. They were both created around the same time, 1957, I think and probably for slightly different criteria with regards to time of service.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges

Nice photo. Navy photos are rarer than the army ones, and that particular badge is rarely seen in wear.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges

Thanks. With many photos (and even more documents, but few medals :( ) from the family (dad, mon, and son [him]) that is the only one that shows this badge.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges

Or maybe, it may not be directly related to those long-service medals...

Effectively, it is for people who decided to serve beyond the mandatory military service period (СВЕРХСРОЧНАЯ СЛУЖБА).
