hello, if I well read the threads about awards boxes, I think this one is pure fantasy. The original boxes were extremly sober and common, made of red cardboard.

If I remember right, they are produced by an US company.

Tal,

I think Orders of Glory with boxes like you have pictured were awarded only to foreigners.

The box for the Order of Lenin on the picture is a fake, made for a copy.

Alexei

Type 3 OGPW with an ugly issue box. Somebody drew the "Guards" ribbon on it.

Tunes out I don't have any boxes for the order of Lenin left :( It's a cardboard box covered with red leatherette that accommodates both the Order and the ID. The inside is place white cardboard. Recipient's name would often be typed at the side of the box.

They are definitely fakes, just look at the ugly typeface on the top. I am not sure who made them, but I believe it was a US company. They started selling them about 5-7 years ago at about $200 a piece (with the medal of course).

Alexei,

I've always said that NOTHING is comparable to original order of Lenin (except Order of Ushakov, Suvorov, Victory...)

to my sorrow, it's not mine...

Hello

I only have 2 decorations in their boxes. Its a HSL and its order of Lenin.

The Star is in a leatherette covered box and the Lenin in a cloth covered box. The leatherette box is well made and still in great condition. As regards the Lenin box, the cloth is the same as found on some of the order books. Note the uncovered areas

I am not sure if these were the original boxes they were awarded in. But to date them the orders were awarded in 1948 and the numbers are Star - 2924, Lenin 80151

Kind regards

Munroe

Dave,

Interesting hypothesis..I've seen Jubilee issues of the Order of the Patriotic War, and some screwback Red Banners which came in those cheap white cardboard boxes stuffed with paper with a corresponding serial number stamped on the top. My Order of the Symbol of Honor screwback has a plain, small box covered in red leather-type material. The inside is unusual, in that it is padded on the top, but not the bottom.

Perhaps the prestige of the recipient had a bearing on how elaborate the construction of the box was? Seems like all the Gold Star medals got the nice padded boxes, and the Order of Friendship got those really nice padded cases. In fact, I was chatting some time ago with the grandson of the head of the Turkish Communist Party. It seems he had inherited all of his grandfather's awards upon his passing away and was interested in talking about the history behind each one as he remembered. His Grandfather received awards from all the communist countries, and what's more, they were presented and signed by heads of state and other big government types. He sent me pictures of the massive collection, unfortunately I didn't save them, but one of the awards was an Order of Friendship in the exact box pictured in McDaniels book.

So, maybe party-friendly awards were more apt to receive the nicer boxes.

I would tend to agree. Especially in the case of the Order of Friendship, which was essentially a diplomatic award.

Is it possible that higher awards given out on ceremonies in Kremlin were put into nice boxes and the awards given in the less important places were just in the original plain white cardboards?
