Calling this a Chernobyl cleanup award is, IMHO, wrong.

Eric, as I said, and as Marc has clarified, this award is not for Chernobyl. The decree date is a clear indicator. "Real" orders and medals for Chernobyl were awarded by decrees of December, 1986 and October, 1988. Now turning to the citation, we see that Chernobyl is just mentioned as one example of good conduct and preparation over the course of his career. It is not for bravery or exceptional logistical feats in the Zone. For examples of "real" Chernobyl awards, please see the attached citations.

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

I found interesting information on Internet. This is additional information regarding Official Chernobyl Awards of Ukraine.

According to the decree of the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers awarded the Order of Liberty for his contribution to overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
Viktor Yanukovych awarded state awards management of some foreign countries for a significant contribution to overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the implementation of international humanitarian programs.
Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise II degree received Prime Minister of Kuwait Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah Nasser, III degree - Director General of the IAEA in the years 1981-1997 (Sweden), Martin Hans Blix, the foreign ministers of Poland and the Republic of Cuba Radoslaw Tomasz Sikorski and Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez Parrilla.
The President also awarded the Order "For Services» II degree of Vice-President of the International Organization "Chernobyl Union" (Russia) Vyacheslav Grishin, president and chairman of the board of directors' Relief and Development Fund Children of Chernobyl "(USA) Zeno Matkowski.
In addition, a number of representatives of foreign countries were awarded the Order "For merits» III degree, "For courage» III degree and the Order of Princess Olga III degree.

Re: Official Chernobyl Awards Research Project

Guys, I moved this thread back into the researchers corner section of the forum, and re-named it.

Let's try to make this thread as valuable as possible and please keep the subject matter entirely on topic. Keep anything not related to an official Chernobyl award out, and continue to contribute any relevant information. This thread has the potential to become a fantastic resource, let's make it one of the first great group threads of 2013 :)

Let's hope everyone remembers the original question at hand.

I apologize, looking back at it, my opening question clearly gave the wrong impression for the intent of this thread. Allow me please to ask the real question: What do we know about official awards (decorations issued by the governments of the USSR, RF, Ukraine, or any other nation) for Chernobyl?

Initial post edited.

I'm working on putting together the beginnings of an answer to this question and hope to post findings shortly.

Re: Official Chernobyl Awards Research Project

I think the 3 former Soviet nations that will be most likely candidates due to geographic location are The Russian Federation, Belarus and Ukraine. I also wouldn't be surprised if the PMR has awarded personnel - but it is unlikely such awards will jump at us.

It would also be interesting to see which time period is qualified as "clean up" as it is still a grave issue. Also if there are awards for "liquidating" and "advocacy of issues caused".

Good points.

Here is one more example of a Chernobyl citation, the last I've been able to find.

I though I had better numbers, but in total to date, I've only observed 5 Red Stars and 5 OSH3's. Two of each were awarded in 1986, the rest in 1988.

I've read about Medals for Protecting Public Order and Medals for Bravery in Firefighting awarded, but don't have numbers.

Apparently all liquidators who worked on the roof of the reactor were given gramotas. Examples shown in this youtube video at 3:30. Elsewhere in this video, or perhaps in another on youtube, there is footage of the gramotas being handed out as soon as the men returned from the roof.

Re: Official Chernobyl Awards Research Project

What were the numbers on the Red Stars? Close together or spread apart?
