Question about enamel repair
Jeff,
Seeing your ORS (my favorite Soviet Order) I can see where the lack of enamel would bother you. Still, if it were mine I'd leave it as is. As for the "ring" I'm not sure. Bottom line, you are the guardian of this ORS that was awarded to somone for valor or long service. Please keep this in mind when making your decision. Best, Doc |

Ooo Jeff, I like that one a lot. Nice low number, too.
It's a beauty. Display it with pride!

sorry, guess I should better say, the screwback. The thingy (very technical term) that screws onto the medal.
Also, I was watching a #67,410 on eB?y with two enamel arms missing. It went for $113.50. Now, the question begs, are these people screwy or what? I paid $15.00 for mine and felt I over paid. |

Jeff,
In good shape (enamel intact), RS with screwpost base costs about $100 these days. The one on eBay was not worth that much, but if someone feels that he has too much money, why not? The thingy is called a screwback plate. Please post a photo of it. Marc |

When I get back home from the office today I'll post a pix of my ORB with enamel damage. Despite the damage I love that ORB.

Screwback plate
Marc,
Here are examples (front and back) of both. The first two photos are the "cheap" looking versions. Second two are the better quality versions. Definately like the second set since they give a better feel to the over all medal. |

Damaged ORB
Poor baby....has that "been there, blown that up" look to it.
Note damage to flag which is fairly common to see in older ORBs and damge to the enamel on the 3:30 and six o'clock arms of the red star.

Question about enamel repair
Jeff,
The same or similar action(s) may have resulted in the award of your Red Star, especially with the low serial number. Most likely NOT for long service...which leaves valor. I have one Order of the Red Banner and it has missing enamel. I wouldn't trade it for the world!!! Especially since I have the research now and know that his blood was spilled earning it. Best, Doc |
