Badge "Svir'stroj 1928-1934".

This one was captured by a finn artillery officer on river Syväri in 1941. I think it is a power plant builders badge. There was a big hydro electric power plant then and it exists even today.

SVIR River Dam??? Badge

Hi Folks,

Picked this up at the local militaria fair yesterday. It seems to relate to the Svir river which I believe had several hydroelectric dams built during 1928-1934. No mint mark on the badge but the retaining nut has a nice MONDVOR mark and is numbered 129.

Can anyone please give me any info on this badge?

Found the same badge captured by Finnish officer

Re: SVIR River Dam??? Badge

Now this is how an old badge ought to look. Notice the subtle hues on the blue enamel(s). Nice.

Re: SVIR River Dam??? Badge

Normally we don’t go into history but its different when you’ve been there, and swum in the river, and the following is really just a gloss over anyway.

Svir Stroi is a village on the Svir River between lakes Lodoga and Onega. A dam (and power plant) was built in the 1920’s – 30’s as part of the electrification plans of Lenin, which were subsequently included in the first 5 year plan. The dam construction also included locks for the river and the river was also deepened and canalized to enable navigation as part of the Baltic-White Sea Canal project. The river also connects through Lake Onega to the Volga and Moscow Rivers. Today it is the last stop for cruise ships from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The cruise ships stop at the entry to the locks, let the passengers disembark and visit the town. They then re-board below the lock after the ship has passed through.

And there is a lagoon upstream behind the dam and the lock where the locals swim (in the summer). The water absorbs the tannins from the local forest and is very dark and therefore warm on top but cold below the first 10 – 20 cm. Now how would he know this unless he joined them in the lagoon?

You can check it out on Google earth where some of the tourists have posted photos.

6 years of city of Svistroy Badge

Svirstroy, what you have on the top of your badge, is the name of city near St. Petersburg, with population les as a 1000 people. City was build in 1928 due to the rising an Nizniesvirsk Hydro Power plant.

If you will be interesting to trade, email me.

Re: svirstroy 1928-1934

There are two variations of this badge
It's hard to say, what variation is your badge, however:
Bronze - around $600.00-700.00
Silver - around $1000.00
It's not easy to sell, but the badge is rare.:thumbsup
