Official Chernobyl Awards Research Project

What do we know about official awards (decorations issued by the governments of the USSR, RF, Ukraine, or any other nation) for Chernobyl? Let's all chip in and see what we can learn. :thumbsup

A specific sub-question to start: Does anyone have an idea of the number of official Soviet awards for events at Chernobyl?

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

"They" say c500,000 Badges but there was also an array from HSL down. I've not seen a Chernobyl citation, some may. It hasn't hit that magic 50 year period yet though. Time takes time.

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

One of the Chernobyl themed documentaries (forget which there have been a few) stated that there were only two HSL for Chernobyl clean-up. One posthumously and one to a recipient who has now also stopped living. How accurate that is though is questionable.

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

Marc, do you remember when that sale was? Any images or notes on the price?

So far I've seen about 5 Red Stars, one or two OSH3's, and the text of a decree awarding 42 people (mostly non-military).

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

The general who was in charge for the helicopters was awarded a Hero-title of some kind...

I can't seem to find the link...

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

All I can say is that I have visited the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev, and don't remember having seen any high rank award there...

Re: Official Chernobyl awards

This medal is the first (and only one) medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up of Chernobyl plant. Approximately 800,000 people were in charge of the removal of the consequences of the April 26, 1986 Chernobyl disaster on the site of the accident. The medal was established by the USSR State Committee on Labor and Social issues on May 14, 1990.

The Order “For Courage” was established by the Decree of the President's of Russian Federation №442 on March 2, 1994. The order “For Courage” is rewarded to citizens for selflessness and courage rescuing people, protection of law and order, crime control, during the natural catastrophes, fires, and other extraordinary situations, and also for the daring and decisive actions during the performance of military, civil or official duty under the conditions with the risk for the life.
The order is presented together with a certificate.
