Re: Translation Help

Something like: In terms of the spring slush he supported infantry by fire, often manually moving the gun to position of direct fire without lessening the rate of fire against the enemy

I believe the gist is something like during the rasputitsa he supported infantry by manually moving the gun to fire on direct-lay without lessening the rate of fire against the enemy.

However, I would like to get it right and am trying to improve my translation skills.

Simon,

A smoother translation would be: "Supporting the infantry with fire and manuever, and operating in rainy spring thaw conditions, he manually rolled out the howitzer to direct fire mode without lessening its rate of fire on the enemy."

Re: Translation Help

I have been working on the citation for a member of the same artillery regiment who was awarded the next OG3 to the guy part of whose citation is above. perhaps the same gun crew????? Could anyone please let me how my attempt can be improved.

In battles of annihilation with cut-off German troops in the Baltic region, comrade Matevosyan proved himself to be a steadfast, courageous and selfless warrior. In the battle for the settlement of SKAPARI on 23.3.45 he was part of a gun crew that was put forward in an exposed position, that using direct fire mode destroyed 2 machine gun nests, 2 dugouts and killed 12 enemy soldiers. Working neatly and precisely at the gun, he provided accurate fire leading to the successful capture of the settlement.

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Simon,

A more precise translation follows:

"In battles to destroy cut-off German troops in the Baltics, comrade Matevosyan proved himself to be a steadfast, courageous and selfless combatant. In the battle for the settlement of SKAPARI on 23.3.45 he was a member of a gun crew that moved forward to an exposed position and, firing point-blank at the dug-in enemy, destroyed two firing positions, two dugouts and killed 12 enemy soldiers. Working accurately and precisely at the gun, he ensured the effectiveness of its fire leading to the settlement's capture."

Re: Help needed with Document

Here's another question of which republic this is from (once again, too long between requesting it and receiving it - not the seller's fault). Anybody know what language that is on the cover below the Russian? I can't decide between Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania.

[Don't worry, I'll show the inside when I do my next multi-photo thread with my "Druzhinnik" badge and document collection. To me, this is a curious thing to be. The members were given minimal training (if any) and the ID card could get them several "perks" from various people from the actual police to free Metro rides. Just the existence of a group of people like this who watched and "told on" their neighbors (or anyone else they just ddn't like).

This kind of phenomenon intrigues me because I've seen what it did (and may still impact some or many Russians) to create some serious trust issues.

Phillip

(The color was manipulated to make the letters easier to read. The original is much lighter and not nearly so new looking.)

Phillip,

The word above the Russian is a Lithuanian word.
