Ivanov, Grigorij Jakovlevich, Lieutenant-Colonel, Squadron Commander, 17th Air Army

While he and his (sadly incomplete) group are mentioned, directly and indirectly, on other threads, his group and his service deserves a full posting.

I have only partial tranalstions/summaries/precis of the research, so bear with me in cases of strained coherence.

Ivanov, Grigory Yakovlevich, Lieutenant Colonel, born 1908 village of (Saratovka?), (Sepolitensky?) Raion, Smolenskaya Oblast. Member of CPSU since 1932, higher education, Russian.

He was Russian, working class origin, no foreign languages. CPSU 1932 # 1,886,174.

Sr Lt 4.11.3(9?)
Captain 20.10.42
Major 9.5.44
Lt Col 2.9.48

Called up 28.8.33 as a machinist in Dnepropetrovsk Electro-Crane Factory "in the name of Lenin."
August 1933 (he was 25!!!) Student at 9th School of Military Aviation for Pilots and Lieutenants at Rogan, Kharkov Military District
17.12.34 Pilot ("Pilot") Instructor at above
23.1.37 Pilot ("Letchnik"-- I have NO idea what DIFFERENCE the two terms convey) as above

3.10.39 Squadron Commander at above
1.2.42 "Vrid" ( = ?) Commander of a detachment at the same, but relocated (obviously!) to the city of Chimkent in "S.A." (this evades me at the moment) Mil Dist
24.9.42 Squadron Commander in 116th Fighter Aviation Regiment, 238th Ground Attack (Shturmovik) Aviation Division
21.3.43 Squadron Commander still in 116th Fighter Av Rgt but now in 295th Fighter Av Div, 3rd Air Army, No caucasus Front

30.4.45 Deputy Commander of 295th Fighter Av Div for "V.S.S" ( = aerial gunnery ?), only now in 17th Air Army

Decorated as Deputy Staff Commander for Navigation Control Center, 170th Guards Fighter Aviation Division.

Not working.

So discharged "for age" (46) as Lt Colonel-- and what was a fighter pilot/aerial gunnery officer THEN supposed to DO? (hence 1957 "unemployment")

Re: Lt-Colonel Grigory Yakovlevich Ivanov

In chronological order:

His OPW2 citation:

Quote:
OPW2 citation outline thusly—

Captain commanding 3rd Squadron of 116th Fighetr Av Rgt-- in 10 days has personally made 20 combat flights, and his squaadron 207 combat reconnaissance flights -- of which 108 were as escorts for ground-attack IL-2s. On all occasions they protected the IL-2s without loss to enemy fighetrs.

On 3.2.43 in the area of Koldun mountain, drove off (possibly shot down, I'm skimming) 4 enemy fighters, showing himself to be a distinguished fighter pilot and squadron leader.
And, since it is a conversion from a suspension award, I'm sure "someone" will want a close-up?

The OPWi recommendation:

Quote:
His OPW1 was submitted as an ORB. As major and Deputy CO of Aerial Gunnery Service (VSS) of 295th Fighter Aviation "Novo-Moskovsky Order of the Red Banner" Division.
Gist of citation—

At the front since 1.1.43. In this time shown himself determined, renergetic, and resolute commander, excellent disciplined and political reliable officer devoted to the Party of lenin and Stalin and his Socialist homeland, a patriot of the homeland....

Deputy CO for AGS of the division since 1.10.43. Senior pilot, excellenmt theoretical readiness, organized readiness of pilot personnel in tactics and combat quality of enemy planes and operational tactics....

Trained 85 new pilots for combat gunnery with excellent results in preparedness...

In the period of conducting combat operations, Comrade Ivanov six times crossed the foremost lines for ground attacks and for radio station operation of our aviation over the field of battle. By his training, our pilots knocked down 14 enemy planes.

Great work in period from 5.7.43 to 1.7.44 in tactics and methods and enemy methods, instructing pilot personnel. In Bessarabian operations, in the 6 days from 20 to 26 August 1944, division made 1,180 effective combat flights and did great damage to the enemy. He himself flew 51 combat missions in I16s and LA5s, of which flights 35 were ground attacks on the enemy.

Deserves ORB, (day off page) October 1944, Commander of 295th Ftr Av Div, Lt Col Shatilin
Concur 4.10.44 CO of 9th Mixee Aviation "Odess" Corps, Aviation Lt Gen Tolstikov
Per 17th Air Army 17.12.44 OPW 1 (Scribble)
And the Nevsky recommendation summary:

Quote:
Entire first paragraph is the same sort of boilerplate about being at the front since... devoted to party of L&S, disciplined, energetic yada yada.

In the period of participation in the Patriotic War made 51 combat flights in I16s and LA5s, without losing any aircraft.

Since last decorated, he has not made any combat flights in view of the fact that in this period he has taken part in ground combat and represented himself with impressive quality for coordination and cooperation of aviation with ground forces. In the period of Vienna operations with the 9th Motorized-Mechanized Corps for calls to aviation from the field of battleand directing them onto enemy fire points for support of our ground forces. At the end of March, lightly wounded in the right leg by enemy aircraft in attacks on our tanks.

Deserves to be awarded ORB....

16 May 1945 CO of 295th, Lt Col Aritov

126.76.45 altered to Nevsky by 17th Air Army, Major of 2nd Dept Velichko

So... he was a forward air coordinator with ARMORED forces, calling down air strikes, and was himself wounded on the ground by German counterparts of his own branch!
The ORB, missing ORS, and CSM were all long-service awards.

I've shown the document for the "exotic Bulgarian", the Medal for the Patriotic War 1944-45, elsewhere, so I guess there's no reason in posting it again here? The group is fully documented, so, as usual, your wish is my commend (especially it is "mostly scanned", even if largely untranslated).

12. Permanent home address of the prospective awardee and the address of his family: Noviye Kaidaki, city of Dnepropetrovsk

Short, concrete description of his combat feat or merits:

Comrade Ivanov has been serving at the front during the Patriotic War since January 1, 1943. During his time at the front he showed himself a strong-willed, energetic, and decisive commander. He is a perfectly disciplined and dutiful officer.

He demonstrated his dedication to the Party of Lenin and Stalin and the socialist motherland in his everyday combat duties. A true patriot of our motherland, he gives all his energy and knowledge to hasten the destruction of the enemy.

He has been serving as assistant division commander for aerial gunnery affairs since October 1, 1943. Since the very first days he served in the division he has been taking on his service duties with an energy peculiar to а Bolshevik. A senior, experienced pilot who received fine theoretical training, he exemplarily organized the training of the aircrews of the division with regard to studying the tactical flying qualities and combat performances of the enemy aircraft and their operational use by the enemy.

During the period he served as assistant division commander for aerial gunnery affairs, he put into service as aerial gunners 85 young aviators, who had arrived at the division as reinforcements and had been trained with good and excellent results.

Six times during the period of combat operations comrade Ivanov was located at the front line with the ground troops and at the command posts, where he guided our aircraft across the battlefield. With his guidance our pilots shot down 14 enemy aircraft.

In particular, comrade Ivanov carried out a lot of work in bringing the division to a state of full combat readiness preliminary to the Chişinău operation. He collected and compiled all documents concerning combat missions conducted by the division between July 5, 1943 and July 1, 1944, as well as information on tactical maneuvers and methods of operation used by enemy aircraft, which he used to educate the aircrews. He held ten day-long meetings with the division’s flight commanders, practicing firing at ground targets. As a result, during the liberation of Bessarabia the division conducted 1180 effective combat sorties in a period of six days between August 20 and August 26, 1944, inflicting severe damage, while suffering only very minor losses itself. For this, considerable merit is due to comrade Ivanov. Despite his poor state of health, comrade Ivanov personally carried out 51 combat sorties in an I-16 and La-5, including 35 combat sorties conducting ground attacks on enemy troops, while he was at the front.

For accomplishing the combat missions assigned to him during the fight against the German invaders in an exemplary manner, he deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

Comrade Ivanov has been serving at the front during the Patriotic War since January 1, 1943. During his time at the front he proved himself dedicated to the cause of the Party of Lenin and Stalin and the socialist motherland. He is a disciplined and dutiful officer. He has been serving as assistant division commander for aerial gunnery affairs since October 1943. In his duties he showed himself an energetic officer, capable of taking initiative and possessing fine organizational skills. A senior, experienced pilot who received fine theoretical training, he perfectly organized the education of the aircrews of the division with regard to studying the tactical flying qualities and combat performances of the enemy aircraft and their operational use in combat by the enemy. He prepares his lessons with great diligence and methodically correctly trains the aircrews’ aerial gunnery skills. He correctly organizes the process of training and putting into service young aviators.

During the time he took part in the Patriotic War he performed 51 combat sorties in I-16 and La-5 aircraft. He didn’t shoot down any aircraft.

Since his last award he didn’t fly any combat sorties, due to the fact that he was located with the ground troops during this period, where he acted as an Air Force liaison officer, coordinating the cooperation between the Air Force and the ground troops. During the Vienna operation he was located with the 9th Mechanized Corps, giving orders to the aircraft and guiding them to the enemy firing positions offering resistance to our advancing units. At the end of March he was lightly wounded in his right leg during an enemy air raid on our tanks.

For accomplishing the combat missions assigned to him during the fight against the German invaders in an exceptionally conscientious manner and for displayed initiative and competence in educating and putting into service young aircrews, he deserves the Order of the Red Banner.
