Those pesky East Germans foolin' around with the established order of things. :)

Re: OGPW 1st class to a Gurkha officer

The key to the granting of the Soviet award is that in WW2 they followed the same precedent which was set for WW1 and the Crimea War.

The Soviet awards, like the other allie awards, were randomly split \ issued to men who had already received a Gallantry Award (including MSM or MID). You therefore didn't have to have served in the country that granted the award. It was a 'lottery' if you got one, and many people who did get foreign awards had qualified because of service in the main theatres.

Some good examples of Indians in WW1 are:

A member of an Indian Cavalry Regiment who served in Russia in 1919, and was awarded an IDSM for charging a group of horsemen, and was awarded a SERBIAN Gold Medal.

A Havildar of the 36th Sikhs who served in France and was awarded the Russian Cross of St George 1st Class.

As far as I know there was no citations for these awards, with the exception of the the original citation for the MC or the MID etc., although I expect there was a letter which said 'Thankyou for your Valuable Contribution'.

I trust this clears this up Paul, but you may have reached this conclusion over the last two years.

Best Regards,

Mark

Soviet Awards to non-Soviet personnel.

Hello,
I have been researching the medals won by my great grandfather during WW2. He was a British sailor but he won a Soviet Union medal. So far I have been unable to confirm which medal it was however i know he was on the HMS Jason during its 9 month tour of duty minesweeping in the Arctic while based in Murmansk. This has led me to wonder if he was perhaps awarded the Defense of the Soviet Transarctic Medal however I am unsure if this medal would have been awarded to a non-soviet sailor. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me out.

Also if it isn't this medal does anyone know of any other medal that might be a candidate?

Thanks in advance guys.

Alpha429,

Welcome to the Forum!

The first question that may help clear up some fog is: when was your grandfather awarded a medal? Was it during or immediately after WWII, or was it in the 1970's~80's?

It would have been just after the war because he died in 1958

Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

OK, so that narrows down the field to WWII issues. IMHO, it could then be any of the following:
. Medal for Military Merit (more likely)
. Medal for Bravery (less likely)
. Medal for Defense of the Soviet Arctic (more likely)
. Victory over Germany (less likely)
Now, are you sure that he received a medal, or could it have been an order, albeit on suspension?

Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

to be honest i am not sure, my grandfather's memory is not so good in his old age plus my great grandfather did not like to talk about the war in any great detail except from the odd story however he was only a stoker 1st class in the engine room, he wasn't an officer which is why i wouldnt have considered it to be an order.

Alpha429,

See if you can find some old photos of your grandfather wearing his awards.
