Re: 1950's combat awards for Korea, Hungary, etc.

OG3s in the mid/high 700k range were also pretty common GPW catch-up awards. I have more than a dozen between 750k and 800k, but I suspect they are all GPW catch-up/serious wound awards. I'd be pleasantly shocked to find out otherwise, but I really doubt that possibility.

Order of Glory, 3rd Class, Nr. 38256 or 38956?

What are your thoughts about this Order of Glory, 3rd Class? It also appears to have been an error when stamping the number.

Is it 38256 or 38956?

Yes. ;)

Oh man... great photos. It looks like it was definitely a "2" originally. The horizontal strike was added after the "2" was formed. But it looks like it was done concurrently - it's the same type of strike as all the others. And it doesn't look done by accident; very firm and placed specifically where it is, almost exactly like the top of the "3". Meaning it was done on purpose. So... you got me. If I had to make a determination I'd say it's a "9" simply because it looks purposely placed. And why would someone do that if the original (A "2") was the correct number?

That's only my (in this case) very humble opinion!

Perhaps get both numbers researched? :idea

Thanks, Eryk, but they're scans, not photographs. Regardless, let's say I obtain research on 38256 and 38956, I am not sure there would be a way to determine which citation was the correct one, that is, of course, unless I obtain the other Order of Glory. . .

My hypothesis is that it was simply a stamping error, and this is 38956. . .

These particular numbers were hand-engraved, not die stamped. Hand-engraving is a dying art that has largely been replaced by rotary tools.

I personally, would lean toward a "2". The engraver probably errantly started with the centered, horizontal cross-bar, realized his mistake for the intended "2" and then completed it. Not scientific, but my reasoning at least.

The centered, horizontal strike seems to be applied last, as it goes over the two vertical strikes (and is in the exact same style as in the '3'), so I'm leaning towards it being a '9' (corrected from a '2').

I'm with Auke on this one, but it's a tough call. That center strike is deeper and overwrites the others, telling me it came last after the "2" was finished. With that, I'm torn but say "9". I've got a couple like this that leave me scratching my head.

Guys,

It was a "9", that the engraver changed for a "2".

Re: 1950's combat awards for Korea, Hungary, etc.

I guess it's all certainly possible. Given the differences in numbers of troops involved in these smaller actions vs. the GPW, finding one is very much a needle in a haystack. Still, it sure would be a cool acquisition.

Lurking somewhere in those mid/high 700k rotary-tool OG3s may be a non-GPW gem...
