Christophe,

It is my understanding that Soviet orders and medals were awarded in boxes, and handed out this way. The protocol seems to be different from, say, the French way where they physically pin the award on you.

Now, just a slight correction to what I just wrote before; when Brezhnev was awarded with the Order of Victory, it was actually pinned onto his jacket (hence the reason why his was converted to screwback).

Thanks Marc.
I think you mean "converted to pinback"...

I agree you can award it directly onto the jacket only if it is pinback,, for obvious practical reasons.

Actually, I interviewed US veterans who told me about how they were awarded screwback awards. The awarding process included a Soviet officer with an awl (one vet described it as an ice pick) who would puncture a hole through the pocketflap of the recipient's uniform. The next officer would then insert the award into the hole and put the screwback on it. They did this to three star generals on down, and may well have done it to generals even higher (such as Patton) who are photographed wearing their awards.

Very interesting Dave!!! That way, it is easier. In the pic posted by Lapa, it is not clear if the order is fixed on the lapel or on the jacket itself...

Christophe,

The Order of Victory is on permanent display in the last (or next to last?) display case on the right side from the entrance. In other terms, when you go in, keep going straight as far as you can, then turn right; you'll be facing a display case in which it is standing.

PS: it is unassumingly small, in comparison with all the other goodies on display in the vault...

Tal,

I've seen similar copies before, they used to sell for ... $900-1200.

Alexei,

They are still in that price range, albeit toward the upper end.
