I saw this one advertised recently:

“State Awards of Afghanistan”, G. Tisov and V. Shirshov. C. 1998, Moscow. Briefly covers decorations the Kingdom of Afghanistan and in, much more detail, awards of the Communist government of Afghanistan during Soviet occupation of 1978-88.
Also shows chronology of Afghanistan rulers from mid XVII C. up until the Taliban regime, and illustrates changes in the national flag. Soft bound, 72 pp, b/w photos. The only currently available reference on the field.

Anyone have it and care to comment?

I have the original booklet in Russian, which I cannot read. Your title suggests that a translation has been published. I would love to have the English text. A cheap newspaper house printed the booklet and the very interesting pictures are of a terrible quality (no color). The booklet presents the Afghan awards and their background with some details of history.

I am impressed by the organization that was being built by the communists in Afghanistan. I believe it would have converted by now into a post-Soviet type society, perhaps even a democracy, if it had not been destroyed. Much pain and suffering in the world would have been avoided. Look at this (bad) picture with all the decorated officers. Where are these guys now?

I would like to loan the booklet to someone with knowledge of the language for a better book review.

I don't think there is a translation published. :( What Shane quoted is the text posted by a well known NJ Dealer who proposes this book on his website.

Not Soviet reference book, but we "Afganistan" in the forum so maybe it will be ok...

Some years ago, I had heard talk of a revised and expanded (both being badly needed) edition of Г. Г. Тисов и В. Н. Ширшов, Государственные нагрвды Афганистана (Москва: 1998).

Does anyone know if anything has ever happened?

Tisov himself told me that back about 2004, but I haven't seen or heard anything since.
