OK, a question for the uniform folks. I am a rank novice in this area.

What is the best method (lighting, scanning, photography, mystical sciences) to look at a uniform and count the holes and recover (re-imagine) the medals this person originally wore? I can post some scans/photos if this helps, which it may not. Natural light seems best so far.

Seeking wisdom on basic methodology.

Good question. Sometimes photos, in low light, with flash, seem to make them come out more (if you do a high resoultion photo; makes a large jgp, but i can often see much more detail).

often it depends on the material; soft wool, like on an M1945 general/marshal often leaves a good imprint. cotton field uniforms or rougher wool, can often fail to leave much of an outline.

also, look for wear points that would have been made by the sharp edges; often if you count / map them you can say it was a Red Star, or Patriotic war, etc.
