It is just what I think would be suitable I have never really been into collecting different types and variations though. EDIT Actually it is four of each And I am now talking of the display collection, not what is on uniforms. Last edited by Tretov; 11-11-2005 at 05:10 PM. |

I'm still buying Soviet orders & medals, but as everybody said, it's getting too expensive. I'm just thinking that this is not a suitable hobby for a student like me.
I haven't got any impressive Soviet collection, but only to complete my defence, capture & liberation medals collection I have to pay big dollars by now. I can't afford now to buy the orders with documentation, because of the prices. So I only stick to the medals. In the last months I've been more & more interested in Yugoslavian orders, because I find them very interesting, beautiful and because the prices are much more reasonable than Soviet orders. I'll have to wait a few months before I can buy some more Soviet medals.

Why don't some of the newer collector/experts do more for the hobby? Anyone can write articles for collectors magazines - I haven't seen an article in the JOMSA about Soviet items for a couple of years if my memory serves me correctly. Something as simple as an article about a set you researched will go a long way towards public awareness. There are several contributors to this forum that could even do an article on their favorite or most interesting sets. I've got a book coming out in spring/summer 06 so I'm trying to contribute, but if you want to see more "activity" - do something!

I'm currently preparing a paper on a Brother-Sister documented Soviet group for the JOMSA.

Probably a dumb question, but what is JOMSA?

Ah, thanks. Sorry, I'm a bit out of the loop as I'm not really an awards-collector guy.
Since I'm already posting, I'll add my 2 cents. I started collecting about a year and a half ago, and thought prices on some really cool stuff was soo expensive (like Lenin and Nevsky) I'd wait until I was sure I wanted one. Now, there's no way I could afford one (particularly the Nevsky ) . So it worked out that I just buy lower-value stuff, and admire others' collections. I still have a high interest in the mid to high end stuff, and read all the posts on the stuff, but since I've never actually even seen one in person, I don't really have anything to add to the threads, so I don't post. I imagine that that is the case with quite a few people. |

Same for me, the last additions I bought for my collection was from a fellow collector selling his collection last spring. And I have moved on to Mongolian Orders.
There are still a few soviet medals I am looking for and will buy if I see one for sale. But for the most part, my soviet medals buying has ended. I can't justify the prices. I will most likely now have some of my rarer orders researched to improve my collection. [QUOTE=new world] The last Soviet item that I acquired was about 1/2 year ago - from a fellow collector. The last one before that - it was over a year for me as well. I just can't justify the prices dealers are asking these days, I guess the same goes for most of collectors, leaving dealers sitting there with large stockpiles not be able to move them.
