Just a little comment on this slight bending of the rules. To some extent this applys to other nations armies as well. I was "allowed" to wear a Royal Tank Regiment Badge with a Kings crown in silver. This was because my father and uncle were both in the Royal Tank Regiment. The Badge was in fact my fathers who served in the tanks just after the war.

No, however I heard about an officer who simply remove the swastika from his original awards and continue to wear them while serving in the Bundeswehr.
