soviet colonel's uniform?
I just picked this up last week in the Halloween section of a thrift store. I think it is a Summer Service tunic for a Colonel of artillery.
Had to go up in the attic and find my DIA hanbook on the soviet armed forces (1978) to get the information (I had fogotten what a handy book it is). anyway I do plan on selling it once I get it cleaned but haven't a clue of value and era. Any input would be appreciated |

It is modern and common--probably worth $25 tops.

Hey it's good to see you on here. I knew it was a modern but I'm not sure as to if and when the styles changed over the last twenty odd years of the Soviet state.:)

In this case timoldova's "modern" means 1970 to 1994-ish. The uniform is an M1969 style uniform, first actually used in 1970 but is clearly from the later end of the spectrum given its fabric, etc. It is likely late 1980s. They continued to be used until replaced by the Russian AF's M1993.
That said they are still made today for sale in Ukraine so if yours looks brand new it could be one of those post-Soviet "fakes". Shawn |

Adding to that. This uniform is for that of a Soviet Artillery Colonel. The fabirc on colonels uniforms was of slightly better quality than that of other officers and conscripts. It might be an idea (if you can) to compare the quality of this uniform to that of another officers uniform. Like Tim says, it is worth about $25 tops.

Hi vikingraider, I know the rule of better cloth quality for colonels jackets is exact for parade jackets, but does it applies too for a service uniform? thansk! sebastien

Personally, I don't think there is any official rule on these better quality uniforms for colonels. It seems that colonels could have stuff tailor made instead of store bought like generals but unlike lower ranks. Thus some of them might have had better stuff made but anything they received issue was the same as the rest. So it is also likely that more chose to have their parade tailor made than their service.

colonel
I have to agree with Shawn, i don't think there was an official difference between standard officers uniforms and those for polkovniks. Any that were higher grade were probably done on the colonels orders, not standard issue.
