It was done by recepient of the medals to make the bar look nicer but mostly to protect the ribbons. It's not rare. I've seen plenty of these, but mostly done to single medal.

Any photo of these "single" medals ?

Does some member of the Forum know if this type of suspension, in plexiglass / plastic, has also been used for ribbons of orders (and not only medals) ?

Does anyone has photos ?

Are these plexiglass suspensions also used for orders and high rank awards ?

Has anyone a photo of these single medals with "plexi" suspension ?

Thanks.

Ch.

Christophe,

These are non-regulation and were custom ordered by veterans. They were used with both orders and medals.

Help ID These Ribbons Please!

Greetings all-

Here are a couple ribbons on this general's ribbon bar that I can't identify... They are the last two ribbons, the solid light blue one and the solid red one. When I was living in Moscow, I saw a LOT of more senior officers wearing these two ribbons, but I never could figure out where they were from. Can anyone out there help?

Thanks!

Dave,

Some remarks and suggestions :

* Medals located as foreign or "non official" awards.

* Regarding the size of the ribbons, and as you noticed you have seen a lot of officers wearing these ribbons, I suggest "non official".

* The first ribbon you are looking for is in my view (I have a good view!!) not a "solid light blue", but one with a central yellow strip that can be seen on the photo !!

So my conclusions and proposals : 2 non officias awards of Public Organisations of the Russian Federation.

* Blue / yellow : Medal "Defender of Country" (Cossak Union).

* Red : Medal "80th Anniversary of Great October revolution" (Umalatova)

Hope this helps !!

Cheers.

Ch.

PS/ Indeed, no guaranty from the Government !!!

Christophe, Are you serious?!

I will answer under the assumption that you are serious...

First - the ribbon bar in the picture is NOT on a veteran's civilian suite, but on enlisted general, and morover - there is NO Russian ribbon, just Soviet, and was pictured on USSR period.

So THINK - is it logical that some Umalatova/private organizations/fantasy medals will be present?!?!

Second - the light Blue with traces of Yellow is DDR ribbon, not "Cossak Union" (althogh I had a good :D when reading)

I would suggest more logical medals: The red ribbon is Czech - 30 years of Czechoslovakia liberation, and the light blue with traces of yellow are DDR - I don't know whisc one.

Tal

To be exhaustive, I also hesitated with the "DDR Medal for Friendship - 2nd Class" for the Blue/Yellow ribbon.
The ribbon of this medal is shown in Dave's thread "Ribbons experts needed" (23.02.03 - 8:52).
But I think the yellow strip seems wider and united instead of two thin separate yellow ones.

Tal,

I may be misunderstood... and have taken this bar as part of an actual - contemporary - photo !! (even if no official Russian award...), and that's why I first looked, as an hypothesis, to "unusual" and unofficial medals.
But, maybe not a so good view... and though at that time of the day no vodka yet !!!

I'm in fact more than delighted to bring you some :D !!!!

Ch.

You know, Tal, it's very hot here in Paris !!

Thanks guys, though I didn't mean for the helos to be pulled out... ;)

This ribbon bar was probably from the late 1980's, I'm guessing. As for the light blue ribbon, in the small size it looks like there may be a yellow stripe or two, but blown up to 400%, there's no trace of stripe - it's just plain light blue.

I saw a lot of these being worn back when I was living in Moscow in the early 1990's, to officers down to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. I used to wander around near the one of the General Staff buildings on occasion just to observe the uniforms. :)

Dave,

As I can understand the initial photo is from the General Major Vasili Pavlovich Shpelevski (1920-1998), there is still a possibility : the Hungarian medal he has been awarded : "Magyar Nepkoztarsasag Zaszlorendjenek II. Fokozatat" (sorry for the accents...)
Do you know what this medal looks like ?

The DDR is medal is BTW fully consistent with his carreer.

Christophe-

I believe the Hungarian one is the "Order of the Flag", if I'm not mistaken. That has a different ribbon than the solid red one. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know...
