PROPOSAL - NEW Section on GROUPS

Colleagues,

I think our Forum is missing one important section - documented groups of Soviet awards.

For me the groups have more appeal that single awards, as they provide uniques record of person's accomplishments. Especially if groups are complemented by the archival research.

What if we create separate section devoted to the groups only, where members can post images and history of the groups from their collections.

Good example of how we can organize such section could be seen at Dave's web site (link is located in Dave's member profile).

What do you think?

Best regards,
William

William,

interesting idea, but I am not sure whether contributing members here will wish to share their groups with the rest.

A long time ago Huligan and I tried to start a thread on people's Crown Jewels (because I for one was just a beginner and wanted to see how far various collectors have gone with their collections) but there did not seem to be much interest. I see this proposal as being in the same light.

Let's see if it takes off?

Eric

P.S. This is my 500th post!

Yolkin- congrats on your 500th post!!!

I'm all for the idea of the new section. However, I've found that the majority of collectors don't like showing (or even discussing) pieces from their collection due to some kind of paranoia that dictates that if they exhibit a group, someone is going to steal it... I think I'm in a tiny minority that thinks that these groups should be for all to enjoy (after all, they're not really "mine"... they belong to the vets that earned them... I'm just a caretaker!) If I had more time, there would be about 40 more groups on my website!

Anyway, if folks would be willing to post up groups, I'm all for it.

Guys,

You are right, some members are reluctant to share.

I feel that those fears largely apply to serious groups with Top Military awards.

Groups with lesser awards should be easier to share and still will provide interesting history. You know, on many occassions inexpensive Glories and Red Banners to front-line soldiers have far more impressive sitations than several 2nd class Suvorov/Kutuzov awards to someone in the planning department.

Worse comes to worse - if someone doesn't want to share name of the recepient or SNs - they don't have to.

I think it's worth trying!

William

Guys,

The idea has good intention, but I really don't think it would generate the quality of posts we would really want. Dave hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, many of the big collectors here can't be bothered to contribute anything and I think seeing a forum full of EBay specials ( groups consisting of a seven-digit Red Star, a Jubilee Order of the Patriotic War 2c, and three campaign medals ) would get boring very quick.

Since I think we've decided to forego starting a new category for groups, there's no reason that we can't start a thread either in General Talk (the best place) or in the Orders forum to feature groups. We can even make it a "sticky" so it stays on top. If there's any interest, I'll start a thread.

William, Dave,

Wouldn't it be more logical to open this new thread in the "Researchers Corner" ?

Just my thought...

Ch.

PS / A great and interesting idea.

Good idea!

Let's see what Taz has to say about that, since that's his forum.
