Guys,

Is this just a worn out one, or a fake?

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Shane,

I would personally lean toward "fake". The front lacks details, the serp is quite different from the one on previously posted examples; the writing on the back is not quite as fine and its centering is off, and the border is much larger than on already shown examples.

Title "Hero of Socialist Labour"

Titlul de "Erou al Muncii Socialiste" / Title "Hero of Socialist Work"

1. RPR Hero of Labor 1949-65. Only 62 were awarded. None are hallmarked, but all are numbered. All were made in gold. Quite rare.

2.1. RSR Hero of Labor made in gold. All are hallmarked and all are numbered. There are 300 in all like this. Ones in gold were awarded to VIPs. Awarded 1966-85
2.2. Hero of Labor in bronze gilt. 500 awarded in all. These were awarded to other figures. Awarded 1966-85

3.1. There were other RSR badges awarded from 1985-91 made in gold which had the tricolor ribbon on the suspension (red, yellow, and blue). Some 200 total were awarded to VIPs.
3.2 In silver gilt to lesser figures.

Type 2.2 shown.

Re: Title "Hero of Socialist Work"

Not sure there's a great deal of interest (but, these days, I'm unsure where forum interests lie), but . . .

Title “Hero of Socialist Work” / Titlul de “Erou al Muncii Socialiste”, “RSR”, type 3.2., silver gilt, 1985-91

Re: Title "Hero of Socialist Work"

I know (full well) that interest is limited (at best), but I'll share one more.

Title “Hero of Socialist Work” / Titlul de “Erou al Muncii Socialiste”, “RSR”, type 2.1., gold, 1966-85

Number 122, with document to Ion Potoceanu, 26 December 1972. Unfortunately, these documents are large and don't fit easily on the scanner. I could do it all in pieces, but . . . ?? It is also unfortunate that the badge number isn't given on the docments, but that is the way they did things. (The pair -- both cased -- came from the family.)

Re: Title "Hero of Socialist Work"

So, who was he? Well, a start:

“A Preliminary Analysis of the RCP Central Committee Elected at the 11th Party Congress”, 12 December 1972

Former full members of the Central Committee who were dropped by the 11th party congress, 28 November 1972:

“Ion POTOCEANU, former director-general of the Resita Steel Combine [Combinatul Siderurgic Reşiţa], and later of the Galati Metallurgical Combine [Combinatul Siderurgic Galaţi]; member of the Council on Problems of Social and Economic Organization.”

The 10th Congress was in August 1969 – would he have been appointed then?

Combinatul Siderurgic Reşiţa:

From 1968, could this be him in the attached photo with “the boss”?

Combinatul Siderurgic Galaţi:

“Gheorghiu-Dej died in March 1965, and his successor, Nicolae Ceauşescu, cut the ribbon to the entrance of the works in September 1966. Integrated production began in July 1968, when all the components needed for steel-making had been set up and the first batch of steel came out at steel mill #1. Activity grew at a consistent pace, and by 1972, there were 40,000 employees – over 50,000 in the entire works, including nearby industrial units. A 2011 study found that two-thirds of Galaţi residents either worked or used to work at the plant or related factories, or had an immediate family member do so. According to official records, output reached a maximum in 1988, with 8.2 million tons worth some $7.2 million. By the early 1990s, the works had caused serious air, water and soil pollution in Galaţi. As of 2010, there were a number of waste disposal lakes behind the works, some containing cyanides, less than 2 km away from the Danube.”

So he probably got his Titlul de “Erou al Muncii Socialiste” as a retirement gift (in addition to the reason cited on the document)?

As always, research is ongoing and eternal . . .

Re: Title "Hero of Socialist Labour"

Did the all have a yellow stripe on either side of the ribbon? I was offered one with an entirely red ribbon in gold plated bronze.
