Kochetkov, Petr Korneevich, Section Commander, Minesweeper 808, Baltic Fleet
Here is a great citation from a Navy group that I have in my collection. Kochetkov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for this action as well as the United States Navy's Distinguished Service Medal. He is one of only 22 Soviet sailors to receive this medal during the war. Here is the citation:
Award Citation As a Section Crewmember of Mine-Sweepers, 2nd DKTSh Brigade of Trawlers OVPa, Red Banner Baltic Fleet, Petty Officer 2nd Class Kochetkov, Petr Korneevich, Is recommended for the Order of the Red Star. (Awarded Order of the Red Banner, Orders No. 073 from 21 October 1942.) 1. Nationality: Russian. 2. Social Background: Worker. 3. Party Membership: Member of the VLKSM. 4. From which time in the RKKA or RKVMF: From 1940. 5. Any Service in the Civil War: Did not serve. 6. Year of Birth: 1920. 7. Wounds or Contusions: Heavily Wounded. 8. Earlier awards received, when and for what: No awards. 9. What incentive for earlier awards and for what: None. 10. Service in the White or any other bourgeois army or as a prisoner: Did not serve and not captured. 11. Permanent address: K.B.F., V._.P.S., 1001, p/ya No. 572. I. Short, Concrete Explanation of Military Display or Merit. During the time of battle with the German Fascists, Comrade Kochetkov displayed courage and valor, and created the best unified mine sweeping crew. Under his leadership the minesweeper can be extended and retracted in only a few minutes. During the navigations of last year, Comrade Kochetkov swept and destroyed 5 enemy mines. He personally blew them up without fear while inspired by the sole thought to destroy the Fascist vermin without mercy. For displaying courage, excellence and valor, Comrade Kochetkov was recommended for a State Award. During the repulsion of an enemy air attack, Comrade Kochetkov was heavily wounded but did not leave his military duties, scorning danger at the risk of his own life; he threw himself to save the Kater and the lives of his comrades from the threat of explosion. He worked until he lost consciousness. In the ammunition holds, where the Kater’s ammunition boxes were on fire, including creates of grenades and machine gun ammunition, Comrade Kochetkov rushed into the pile of burning creates and started to throw them overboard. Comrade Kochetkov unloaded the ammunition and straining every last nerve, he extinguished the fire that prevented an explosion on the Kater and saved the lives of his wounded comrades. His strength slowly ebbed and he lost consciousness. When he came too, he bandaged his own wounds and then helped his wounded comrades by bandaging their wounds and raising their spirits by his own example of courage and bravery. He deserves the State Award, the Order of the Red Banner. Commander of the Mine Sweeper Brigade, Military Commissar of Mine Sweeper Brigade, /s/ Captain 2nd Rank Perfilor /s/ Senior Battalion Commissar Romanov 29 Sept. 1942 |

Great award citation
A great award citation to a very brave man. Do you know if he was awarded any other orders or medals? Seems to me a man of his bravery should have been decorated a few times.

Dear Ed
Come on... show us a scan of the group. Its a real "beaut". Show us the money.. sorry, I mean show us the medals. Thanks and well done again on a great group. Kind regards Munroe PS Do you think we should have a boast section where member can show off some of their latest acquisitions or just some nice stuff. I am trapped on the bottem end of Africa and its hard for me see these items as their are no dealers / or other collectors of this stuff here. Today an antique dealer told me on old woman offered him a Nevsky but he did not know what she meant. I hope see will bring it back. This is a very rare thing to happed here in SA so I would love to be a boast section, just to see the stuff. Art - what do you think. |

Munroe,
Is it possible to use the exisiting forums? I know some of them (like the medals forum) can really use some extra traffic. Maybe post the information in the most applicable forum and attach one of message icons to make it stand out...I like to use the sheet of paper with writing on it for posts which contain research or information. In regards to the Nevsky, sounds interesting..keep us posted! Ed, nice group..please post some pics! Art

US WWII Navy DSM Group to Soviet
Sorry this took so long to post. Here is the group to the Soviet sailor with the US Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Only 22 Navy DSM's were awarded to Soviets. This is one of my favorite groups in my collection.

Earlier awards received, when and for what: For the Military Minesweeping Campaigns of 1941-42-43 and for heroically saving the Kater while ignoring heavy wounds in the 1942 Campaign. 9. What incentive for earlier awards and for what: For Military Minesweeping and for saving the Kater, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and the American Order “For Distinguished Service,” and the Medal “For the Defense of Leningrad.” 10. Service in the White or any other bourgeois army or as a prisoner: Did not serve and not captured. 11. Permanent address: Field Post 20892. I. Short, Concrete Explanation of Military Display or Merit. He served on a Minesweeper during four military campaigns from the first days of the Patriotic War. Not even one operation took place without this brave, steadfast and exceptionally qualified miner. Always seriously and skillfully managing the minesweepers, Comrade Kochetkov only carried out the military operations in an excellent manner. Neither storms nor enemy action could curb his diligent, persistent and quick reaction in providing excellent mine sweeping work. The Commander of the Kater always was sure of the proper work of the mine sweeping post under the command of Petty Officer Kochetkov. The personnel of the division, even now, often think of the campaign of 1942 when Comrade Kochetkov lost a large amount of blood, when he was heavily wounded during an enemy air raid, and fire engulfed the Kater, when he threw away the ammunition from the fiery tiller section and saved the Kater from exploding. During the Campaign of 1941 he was especially distinguished during the breaking up of a strong German mined defensive position in the Gulf of Narva and during the mine sweeping in the Gulf of Viborg during the Red Army Offensive. As a participant in carrying out 72 mine sweeping operations, his Kater, during the Campaign of 1944, swept and destroyed 21 enemy mines and several mine guards. Six times during mine sweeping as part of the division, the Kater was under attacks of enemy bomber-ground attack aviation, and more then 16 times it was fire of enemy costal and ship artillery. As always, Comrade Kochetkov displayed examples of endurance, steadfastness, courage and calmness while providing excellent mine sweeping work. On 8 July, in the Gulf of Viborg, the Kater was struck in the first section of the gas compartment, which spilled and ignited the fuel, which engulfed the entire Kater in flames, with even the surrounding water was on fire. With every minute it was possible that the second fuel compartment and subsequently, the entire ship could explode. Ignoring the danger, Comrade Kochetkov for about one hour fought with the element of fire and with another military comrade, eliminated the fire. The Kater, with burned sides and deck, was delivered back to the base. Comrade Kochetkov as a persistent participant in the Tallin Raid as a sweeper in the Tallin-Helsinki FBK, the southern coastal FBK during the stormy conditions of November and December, deserves the State Award of the Order of the Great Patriotic War 2nd Class. Commander of the 2nd Red banner D.K.T.Shch., /s/ Captain-Lt. A. Dudin 28 January 1945 Ed |
