Oooo!!!! ExTREMEly nice Doug. :thumbsup That's style. The retro/Imperial look is great IMHO. The Brits do the same thing on parade sometimes and I really dig it.
Doug, does Mrs. D. appreciate that display in her immaculate living room?? ;)

No way Jose! Them there are old school shakos, and you can see where the tradition for big Soviet caps came from. :) :)

Re: New Russian Uniforms!

It's kind of refreshing and yet disgusting to see this...head...gear, spoil such a promising uniform. Personally I think the Soviet union in the 80s had the best uniforms of modern times(within the last 30 years), now a days Russian uniforms seem to be changing to a strange breed between the 80s Soviet uniforms crossed with some sort of odd Tsarist uniforms... :(

I mean, looking at this kepi, or shako, or whatever it is; weren't the bin lid caps big enough?!

Hey Eric,

No Mrs.D to complain, but girlfriend is never thrilled when one of the boys makes it downstairs for a photo shoot...she does consider it her living room.

I can't recall who or where just now, but someone posted a couple of pictures of the guards in these uniforms either during a parade or at the "changing of the guard." Man, I hate it when I forget things, but it was within the last month, so a good search (or somebody with a good memory) should turn them up.

They do look quite a bit more impressive when they have live bodies moving around in them. And I remember the guards carried rifles, but not the usual Kalashnikov - some strange thin things.

Anyway, to get to the point (finally) I like 'em. They have my favorite Soviet/RF colors. And Patrick, I had to laugh at the "gay police parade helmets" because I flashed to Monty Python, but they aren't that bad (then again, I haven't seen "gay pride" parades in Sweden :chuckle).

Honor guards usually carry the SKS. It´s nowadays used as a ceremonial firearm in lots of former east bloc countries. Perhaps was that one you saw.

Esteban, come to think of it, I think they were SKSs with a modified, less obtrusive receiver arm (the thing you pull back on to load it and cock the hammer) and a very small, practically invisible magazine. I had one of them, but it was Korean War old and had a tendancy to go full-auto without warning. Not cool. Gun smiths won't touch them, but dealers at gun shows will happily buy them then slap a synthetic stock on it with a fancy-looking close-quarters "scope" and turn it around to sell for twice what they paid you for it.

Hmm. Were they maybe Mosin-Nagants?
